According to Jalopnik, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the top 10 most grueling events in racing. It is a race starting just above 9,000 ft above sea level and finishing at 14,110 ft up in the clouds. 156 turns will get you to the summit on a road which is usually used for tourists to see the beautiful plains of Colorado from atop the world. The speed limit? 25 mph. The current record for the 12.42 mile course... 8 minutes and 13 seconds posted by Sebatian Loeb... do the math! That means he had to average just over 87 mph... AVERAGE!
Now, of course, that is a 9 time World Rally Champion. What does a race like this mean to the average Joe? When I raced it last year, it was truly life changing. A mix of emotions, highs and lows, driving on the edge and walking away feeling like a victor. Without further adieu, I introduce you to 'Texas' Dave Carapetyan, the owner of the team that got me up Pikes Peak last year in the Time Attack class. Dave has had some issues the past few years with technical difficulties, but this year he finally got together his Unlimited class Evo 8. He drove his maniacal beast making 600 whp to the summit for the first time since 2011... and it was quick. Like most grassroots racers, however, it was not without some issues. Read the article for Dave's take on it all... and then watch the video for some fancy footwork. I'll ask again... Do you think you have what it takes?
