definitally need some more info on the problem to help you out. you didn't nessicarily throw a rod.

what i would like to know why you were driving your first car even though you could feel the knock in the peddal?

This is like another nightmare all over again. I just got this 240 not too long ago and it's doing almost the same exact thing my old 240 did. My old 240 gradually had a real bad knock in the motor that got worse and worse until I could feel it in the pedal, then I lost power, and finally it threw the rod through the bottom of the motor. Now, I was just coming home from a meeting at work and I noticed I was losing power. I was thinking, "Wow, that's weird.... maybe it's just me imagening the car is getting slower though". But then I took the next exit not but a few seconds after and I noticed my steering was very stiff.... I was like "ohhhhh shi* now I know something is wrong" Then I looked at my check engine light and it was ON.... So I pulled over on the highway and sat for a few seconds after turning the car off, then I turned it back on and I heard what sounded like metal rubbing against metal, but it sounded like it was coming from behind me like in the exhaust. So I thought maybe I can get off easy and it's something with the transmission or something. So the car started to die and I just shut it off. Eventually a cop pulled up behind me (ironically the same one who pulled me over just a couple weeks ago) and he helped me push it into the grass so I have 24 hours to decide what to do. I started it up for a split second for him to hear it and then it sounded like it was coming from the motor. Now, I just got back home from a friend bringing me back, and I've got to decide what to do. I remember replacing a rod from my old 240 would be like 400 bucks assuming the block isn't all banged to hell, or the piston. That would damn near break my poor ***, plus I got to consider tow fee's. What I'm really concerned about is how bad is the damage, what am I in for.... I remember when I threw a rod it didn't effect the steering, so that's why it's leading me to believe it might be something else. Either way, I need to get it off the highway before 24 hours is up and I have 3 days off from work, thank god haha. Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

well, your check engine light generally won't come on for mechanical problems.

Your talking about the first 240 right? Well when that happened it was only seconds later that the rod actually went through the bottom of the block, so I really didn't have a chance to stop.

Anyway, when you say more info, what do you mean? At one point when I started it up, while I was waiting for a friend to pick me up, it didn't exactly "feel" like it was the rod. All the symptoms say otherwise. The last few times I started it up it sounded alot like it though. The steering going out and losing power without the sound of a rod knocking are kinda weird. Like I said, the motor didn't start making noises until I pulled over and it sat awhile. The first time I started it up after I pulled over it had a metal against metal sound which I thought was coming from the transmission area, but I could be wrong. Also, that same time I started it up it was running rough to a point it was almost going to die. I think I also noticed the check engine light was off, it only came on when I noticed the stiff steering and no power. So, the second time I turned it on the sound got louder and sounded like it was happening more towards the motor. The third, which was for the policeman was for a split second and it was a horribly loud sound which I'm almost positive came from the motor. After that I didn't cut it on anymore and a friend picked me up.

you know what i bet the power steering pump went out....... if the pump went it would make a metal on metal nois, you sayed it sounded like something bouncing around, could be something in the pump broke. start it up and listen by the pump area.

How may miles on the car? Either oil pump or ps probably gave out. Also if your car suddenly dies while your driving steering becomes stiff and check engine light come son.Because key is turned but engine is shut off.

Florida240, I'm sorry but I didn't understand the last half of what you said :-( The car has 176k on it though. Assuming it is the power steering pump, why would it cause the motor to die and lose power?

Because if the pump is going out it will take alot more power for the motor to turn it, causing loss of power and/or stalling depending on how far gone the ps pump is.

Good idea, thanks sky. So I'm thinking about driving up there to the car tomorrow with a friend and disconnecting that line. Which line is it exactly? And say it's the pump, is this something a guy who replaced the clutch on his 240 do? If so, then I'll have it towed to my house and I'll get it done over my 3 days off.

I just got back from towing it to a mechanic, he listened to it for 3 seconds and said it was a loose rod. It sounds like shi* and he said the crank was bouncing back and forth which means it has a loose rod. Looks like I'm completely f'd over. Hopefully I can find another car before my days off end

Well there's the distinct rod knock too. But other than that, yeah it would probably be the PS pump.
