Was going over a speed bump and there was a pothole on the other side, didnt see it, well front end slammed down. And then soon as I pull out of the parking lot and start accelerating I hear a ticking in the engine. Get home (2 mins away) and shut it off for 30 mins. Start it up to go back and I cant really hear the sound, but It kinda comes and goes I think. It's barely noticable right now if its even there. Im going to check my oil pan for dents right now, whats the worse case scenario? Im not sure this is what caused it, but im guessing I dented oil pan, lifters wern't getting oil therefore causing the tapping. Anyway the engine has a lot of miles so im not sure, opinions welcome. thanks.

if you dented the oil pan, pull it off and pound it out

check to make sure you didnt jar the fan shroud into the fan. It could be the fan is hitting it or something else.

Well it doesnt appear to be any more dented than it always has been. It seems the ticking goes away when the engine is really hot, but I hear it all the time now when starting the car off from warm of cold.

Definately isn't the fan hitting the shroud, just checked that, I pulled the valve cover off and I have no upper guides, the tensioners look fine and so does everything else, and with 262k miles I assume the previous owner did the tensioner/chain replacement. There seems to be plenty of oil around the valves and etc. hmmm

listen to the engine closely, find the general area were the sound is coming from ie: valve cover, fan, etc...

It seems as if it doesnt do it unless under load; ie driving.. not just ideling revving the engine. The noise goes away after the car reaches operating temp also, but at operating temp there is a prevalent rattle sound at exactly 3k rpm's, which wasn't there before. From what I can hear the sound Seems to be coming from the botton of the engine before it warms up, could it be a rod bearing or a valve spring possibly? I was doing some sprinted driving yesterday, but never got over 5k rpm's... I don't think thats enough to do that kind of damage but you can never tell.

Well I checked today, it seemed as if all I smacked was my exhaust on the speed bump, there's a nice dent, fresh ashphalt and yellow paint. I made sure everything was nice and tight, and took it for a test drive, well the ticking/tapping is very noticible at lower rpm's but less so when the rpm's climb. When it heats up to operating temp it is all but gone, but I think when im listening very closely I can still hear it very faintly. I dont know what to do next, suggestions?

If you have a cat on your car take it off if you can and shake out all the broken peices of it.
