Actually, on the mantis thing... There's a hormone in the midsection that says "yo, tap that A." Meanwhile, a hormone in the male's head says "dude, she's gonna eat you, what are you thinking?" So, the female comes up and takes off the head so that the head can't tell the male he's an idiot. The female continues to knaw on the stub of the male's body whilst they intertwine.
