Things to remember when you reinstall a turbo

Make sure you reinstall all of your bolts the first time.

I rebuilt my turbo a week and a half ago. One week later, my turbo started making this weird swirling noise once it began boosting. I saw the filter wasn't bolted to its bracket tight enough, so I tightened it down. The swirling was then replaced (for lack of a better term for this sound) with a quack. Like a freaking duck.

Upon investigation, one of the bolts on the elbow was either never reinstalled (which I know I reinstalled it) or was never tightened down and vibrated its way out. Needless to say, we figured that the gasket must have blown out, cause I replaced the bolt and it still made the quack.

Got a new gasket (the 5 bolt one at the turbo and elbow flange), and went about reinstalling it. Pain in the a** to do with everything still in the car. So lesson number 36710: make sure all your bolts are torqued down before you close up and call it a night.

Amen! To add to that, if you're using an SSautochrome manifold, one of the nuts (the one on the right between the 3rd and 4th runner) can't be put on when the manifold is bolted all the way in place. you have to slip the manifold part-way on the studs, put that one nut in place, then tighten all the nuts down.

you have to do a very similar thing on the stock piece. The last nut I was putting on was the one for the stud that was closest to the engine. I ended up struggling with it for half an hour, and being thankful that my wrists are very flexible. Being on my back didn't help matters either.

With the autochrome manifold, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY to get the nut in place, no matter how much you try :)

Also, that same nut that can only go on at that time...you have to tighten it first too. Once the manifold is tightened down, there isn't enough clearance between the valve cover and the manifold itself to get a wrench in there :-x

For these reasons I'll probably go back to a ported stock manifold with an external wastegate welded on when i upgrade turbos.

i would like to get some equal length runners with an external WG attachment. If I had the money, I'd look at Innovative Turbo, but I can't fathom dumping nearly a grand on a mani

Ya me and my oil line had some issues when i spooled the turbo and the bolt ( which i was told was down ) backed out and spat some oil on the exaust manifold. I almost shat my self when i saw smoke coming from my hood i though " Well thats a nice way to blow 1600 bucks. "
