Hey, well i went last week to go look at a 91 s13 coupe(SE), its only 1 owner and all in great conditon with it being garaged kept it whole life and only got 133k mi. on it. i am goin tommorow to go and buy it maybe i am unable to get the car to a mechanic or a mechanic come take a look at it, beacuse the dude whos selling the car took the registration off like a month ago and he wont let me take it to a dealer to get it checked up, becuase he doesnt want to take any chances cuz of a recent accident 3 weeks ago. so can anyone or someone give me a list of things that i can look for or do myself to see if the car is a good buy and to see if there are any major problems anywhere. the things i already did was look almost everywhere for rust and none was found and the car is original paint. its in amazing conditoin. OH YAH a girl used to drive it to work so most of the miles are highway miles.. PLEASE REPLY TO THIS, I NEED HELP :help :help :help

Listen for the typical timing chain rattle of d00m at that mileage point. Not a completely detrimental problem but the noise is annyoing as hell because it makes your car sound like a PoS.... :( Good luck!

Be sure like they said to check for the usual suspects of noises under the hood and look for rust also in the wheel wells and at bolt and weld locations. Be sure also that there is no unusual wear on the tires and push down on the suspension for a good feel. Also since you said he had been in an accident be sure to look for any possible problems and that everything was done correctly when fixed no matter how minor.

Hey good luck and I hope this helps.

Bushings will most likely be shot , drivers seat torn , SUNROOF WHISTLE@!#!@$@!#&^%*$ , check how it starts when its cold. Inner or Outer irregular tire fade. Do you need to use this for leverge in cost? Its a 12 year old car there will be minor problems. You just have to learn up and keep reading \ working on it , and eventually it will all be worked out.

Also try searching for "Buying a 240sx" that should help more as well.

Tap around the body for different sounds. If most make a hollow kind of sound, it's sheet metal, if it makes a dull thud sound then it's bondo'ed and you know what that means. Look for rust around the hat of the brake rotors, that's more leverage. Broken dustboots on your pinion unit, that seems minor and is pretty easy to fix but can do serious damage to your rack. go through all the gears and listen for funny sounds, if you hear a thud in reverse, you've got a damaged gear somewhere (common in AT's where the spider gear in the diff). Look for electrical problems, anything that is on or makes a funny sound that you know it shouldn't is something to be looked at. Also your glove compartment light. Does it light up when you open up your glove compartment with the lights on? Check all the lights pretty obviously. Look at the bottom near the pinion unit. If you see some slimy looking stuff around there, you've also got a PS steering leak. Rev the motor and look for the obvious colors in the exhaust gas as it comes out. Look around the gas filler, is there rust around the gas filler? That's just some of my recommendations along with the others, esp the rot in the trunk from the spoiler. That's a biggie and can get you lots off on your car price.

The most expensive to fix problem you need to check is the timing chain (not belts!). That's what I've got on mine 91. If it lose, u'll notice the metal sound comming from the top front end. Replacing will cost u 600-800.
