I'm considering going to a concert in Florida at Fort Walton Beach in late August.

Is there anything regionally unique to see/do/eat?

Buy 80's Camaro from muderer for $800, drive to New Orleans, put large animal on roof and save for dinner later.

I used to work and live in the tri-city area of Ft Walton, Destin, and Niceville.

Heres the local run down of things I suggest you not miss:
1. McGuires Irish Pub. AMAZING food. They also brew a ton of their own beers in house. Do not miss this meal! (You'll probably go twice!)
2. Beach it- its beautiful there. If you can, try to swim to the ocean floor for sand dollars which looks deceptively close because the water is so clear.
3. Crab Island- the local party spot. I have a couple of friends with boats (or you could rent your own) and just crush beers with rednecks like you're in a floating trailer park.
4. Comfort Inn- this is the cheapest place you'll find to stay. Its on John Sims Pkwy in Niceville.
5. Midbay Bridge- the bridge to Destin is awesome, and has wonderful aquatic art on one of the marina buildings by Wyland- an international artist. Bring cash, the bridge has a toll each way.
6. Donut Hole- For breakfast. Go to the one at the opposite end of Destin, away from the strip. Less wait, more food. highly recommend french toast.
7. Lance Armstrong and Britney Spears- both have homes there. Visit and pump them in their respective stupid faces.
8. Avoid Crestview. It sucks. Stay away.
9. Louisiana Lagniappe- restaurant in Destin. Also worth going to. McGuires first, this place second.
10. Goofy Golf- The most ghetto, fun, and crappy $5 miniature golf experience you'll ever have. Definitely go.
Address
401 Eglin Parkway Northeast
Fort Walton Bch, FL 32547
11. Baytowne Wharf, San Destin. Cougar watch and look at expensive stuff. Sunset is cool here too.
12. Offshore fishing- if you have time, get on a chartered boat. Its Cobia season- amazing fighter and damned delicious, too.
13. Nightlife: Howl At the Moon- if you've never been, GO!!
14. Boathouse Oysterbar- Very local feely bar- if you can find it. A true gem- dress like a normal person, no goddamned sweater vests and classy clothes here, Jesda. Oysters are awesome, beer is cheap. Atmosphere with live music and folks in high spirits kicks a**.

The largest air force base in the country is also there. An air museum is also present, but the one in DC is way better. You will regularly see Stealth bombers, Raptors, F-16's, 18's, Black Hawks, Apache's, and C130's streaking by and flying overhead. If you're lucky, you might see the mock dog fight over the bay with the fighter jets. You'll probably also hear the bombing practice during the day.

I also have a friend or two there I can hook you up with to hang out.

jesda, the Panhandle is more known for it's beaches than anything else, but you might want to check out Pensacola. That's also home to the Blue Angels and the national museum of naval aviation. If you like war planes, it would be a nice stop.

I wish I could find my cassette from 1992. Would be awesome to have her sign the first piece of music I ever bought.

Agreed!

Many years ago, I spent a few days on Destin Island at a rented high-rise condo on a beach. I was tempted to buy (should have done it!) the 2 bedroom condo that was on sale for $125k. Stupid of me not to do so ... that same condo is probably worth millions now.

The beaches were totally clean, without any crowds whatsoever, and the temperature was perfect - warm, but not over-powering heat. And the water was cool - almost too cold to go in in the late evening.

Our son was stationed for 5 years at Tyndall AFB in Panama City Beach. He was finally transferred to England last summer.

While he was at Tyndall we drove there for our vacations 4 years. Spent very little time at the beach. We did visit some decent food places but the miniature golf, water park and the like are definitely bargain basement. Not impressive but if you're with family you don't see often it doesn't matter. Fun is what you make it and we had a lot of fun.

For golf we mostly played on the base. There are, though some really good golf courses open to the public in the area. I'll have to look up the name but there's an outstanding links-style course just off the 10 freeway near Pensacola. I met an internet acquaintance and played a round of golf at that course.

The golf course I was referring to is The Moors in Milton, FL. A very nice Scottish links type of course.
