I want to swap this motor into my daily but, on first glance, it seems that the transmission is too much for the tunnel on the zenki. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, less bulky, automatic trans,m that may get the job done?

FWIW if you can fit a Z32 MT in the tunnel, i would think a Q AT would fit... I have to do tunnel modifications on my Q in order to get the Z32MT to fit.

There is a S13 with a VH45 and auto in it over in Perth in Australia. There was a website with the build on it. Haven't got a link though...

Remember the data circuit from TCU to ecu to retard timing just before and during shift and slow ramp up after shift.

The is the only way the RE4R03A lasts under oem Q torque. Careful about engine mods as the limit is 303 lb/ft.

I like my Nissan trannies to last 180k+.

Thats good to hear. I will get under there and check the clearances again.

Tech: You always seem to have just that needed piece of missing info. Are you in Atlanta? I am in Birmingham. I might just have to come meet you, and discuss this project.

I wasn't planning on doing anything to the motor that would increase power besides what I would gain from the better headers and ECU upgrade. Maybe get stiffer springs up top to justify a few hundred more engine rpms. Remember this is just my daily.

Ultimately, if I could bring myself to justify purchasing a level ten performance upgrade to a transmission, or find one for sale for a reasonable cost, I would like to get into a 5-speed auto from a later Q (or better) and paddle shift it. These guys have an interesting product:

What do you guys around here think is the toughest auto trans that would fit. Or will the Level Ten make any trans tough?

FWIW, I would be more worried about the factory rod bolts when looking for a few extra RPM than the factory valvesprings. Also, with the stock cam profile and intake manifold design, gaining anything from that added RPM is unlikely. My S14 drag car ran quicker and faster shifting it at 6000RPM than at 6800 on stock cams.

I have a GM Turbo 400 built for 1000HP behind my VH. I think that is one of the toughest auto trans that fits.

I will say good things about my L10 trans. Its had a 275 shot of nitrous with slicks on the back of my Q, lifting the front end of the land yacht off the ground... Had about 100k miles when i took it out, and it still shifted fine.. The TC was kinda torn up (wouldnt really lock up any more).
