Ok. I have only had my car two weeks. This is my first time owning a car like this, so bear with me.

1. I have noticed that this car seems to handle/stop well in the rain. Unlike other rear-wheel drives, I have had no problems at all with slipage of any kind. Either I haven't got the feel of it yet, or this is normal. I like it this way though.

2. Stopping in the rain. GREAT!

3. Lots of brake dust. It looks like it's going to be hard to keep the wheels clean.

4. ~350 miles to a tank of gas, does that sound right? It's ok. I was just wondering what is average, for you mileage watchers.

5. I can't get my cruise control to work. Is it like the gas tank, do I have to have the doors locked or something? Surely this couldn't be broken already..

That's all. So far, I'm really enjoying it.

1 and 2 are probably related to having newer tires. Can't say.

3. ?

4. That looks pretty reasonable to me for all around average.

5. ?

You'll love the car, and the engine is probably the smoothest V6 made.

yeah the oem brakes are really bad about break dust. the cruise control only works at speeds above like 25 or something. so maybe thats it. are you hitting on then pushing the accel/set button up??

Blows my mileage away (200-225/tank) but I do almost no highway driving....and tend to be a little "spirited".

I was taking it easy.. I don't think I will get as many miles this time.

This morning, my doors were frozen shut. Does this not hurt those automated windows at all?

Like others have said, the tires have more to do with wet weather driving than anything. I agree with you, it does handle well in the rain! Next is the brake dust...this is normal for the 03-04 years. I think others have replaced the pads with aftermarket to help stop the dust problem. Your gas consumption sounds right on. Let me guess, you get a low fuel light, fill the tank...and only fill 16-17 gallons right...there is 2-3 gallons still in the tank, giving you 40-60 more miles to the tank. I refuel when you do...

Now, the cruise control. Please elaborate....they usually don't malfunction. Does the "cruise" light come on the dash when you turn it on? What about when you hit the "set" button? You could have a faulty safety switch (clutch or brake). If it's not working, take it to the dealer!

1 - The stoppage in the rain isn't bad... it's the hydroplaining (sp?) I hate

2- see above ^^^

3 - I could swear someone mentioned awhile ago to wax your wheels as this will cut down on the brake dust. G35's with the Brmbos had the biggest problem with this.

4- I do wayyy more city driving then hwy.. my mileage is poor. It was also equally poor in my 05 G. I get a consistant 400km's (248 miles) to a tank before my light comes on. That is on 91 octane.I drive pretty "spirited"

5 - I am clueless regarding your cruise control. Please let us know if/when it get rectified!

On the gas, I haven't seen the light come on yet. I didn't want to wait until then. lol But it was pretty low to me considering I drive 25 miles to work. Not knowing the gas consuption yet, I try to play it on the safe side.

Cruise control. Yes, the cruise light comes on. When I push set/accel, nothing happens except I lose speed and people pass by me like I'm crazy..

I'm sure the tread depth does effect traction, but I also wonder if the heavy weight of the G35C doesn't help. My tires have 15Kon them and I drove in about 1" of accumilated snow today without breaking traction once.

Quite a feat with a manual trans. in hilly nashville.

Lovin this car!

My average fuel consumption after 15,000 miles is 22mpg. Three-quarters interstate and one-quarter local errands. The most gas I've ever put in was 17 gallons.

Well i do about 90% interstate... I get really close to 27mpg. I can get over 500 miles to the tank. When the gas light comes on... you can drive like 60-80 more miles depending on where you are driving.

But you can drive a safe 50 miles with the gas light on!

My daily drive is about 26 miles one way.... i will drive there and back home and back to work again with the gas light on.

I have gotten on a tank of gas is 542 miles and when i filled it i put 19.7 gallons.

I almost ran out of gas LOL

For sure! I have always heard that it is far better to re-fill at about 1/2 tank, no less than 1/4, and to NEVER let it get to the bottom. I try to follow that.

Hello Tampa

There was a recent post that stated that the fuel pump was kept cool by the gasoline in the tank. Letting the tank go to almost empty could cause the fuel pump to overheat & perhaps shorten its life? I'm not sure but I started refilling as soon as the warning light comes on.Where is Jacko3 when you need him

Telcoman:

Yes, the fuel in your cars gas tank does two things (1) to cool the electric coil winds that turn the fuel pump impeller which pumps the fuel through primary and sometimes secondary fuel filters in to your engine (2) having enough fuel in your gas tank also ensures that your fuel pump does not experience cavitation, which can actually damage the impeller and its flow characteristics over time.

Not filling up your gas tank to as full a mark as possible, can actually reduce the life span of your fuel pump. The fuel pump was designed with a specific pressure target in mind. This target differs from one car to the other. As you use the fuel in your car, the pressure drops in the tank. This drop in pressure usually requires the pump to work harder to meet the car's fuel demand. This raises the external/internal temperature of the electric coils that generate the power to the impeller. Thus, without enough fuel, you can actually burn the fuel pump coils.

While all this is occuring, the impeller is also undergoing a process called cavitation. So, with less gas, you get less cooling of your feul pump electric coils, and more damage being done to the impellers flow charcteristics by shcok waves caused by a drop in fluid pressure from bursting bubbles evaporating, and a faster turning impeller.

Your best bet is to ensure that your gas tank has at least 1/2 tank of gas at anytime. Even the car's manual advices against having low amounts of gas in the gas tank. I rarely ever let my gas tank go below 1/4 tank.

N.B. Note that impeller design and material used in manufacture of an impeller can greatly reduce these effects significantly. This can cost money for high quality materials. Again, Infiniti has to ensure that pumps never overheat and cause a fire. While this rarely happens, theoretically, an overheated pump in the fuel tank, can ignite the vapors above and around it. Rather the coils that drive the impellers are designed to cut off or break from excess heat rather than continue operation and risk setting the vapor in the tank on fire.

I hope this helps. Anyone is free to ask questions or comment as is necessary in a respectful manner and with appropriate decorum.

Thanks for the verification of what I have always heard Jacko... but one question. Wouldn't there need to be a sufficient amount of oxygen in the gas tank for the fumes to ignite, even given an over heated pump? I guess it could flash if the gas cap were opened, but air would have to be sucked into the tank for even that to happen.

Not according to this guy!

http://www.twa800.com/index.htm

Ok, he's kind of a conspiracy theorist, but CNN says it was believed to be a fuel leak outside the tank:

Bigwill:

Nice question! Yes, you do need some oxygen for ignition. You may have sparks in the tank but it does need a specific volume of oxygen to actually ignite. Those sparks can occur at reltively high temperatures. If the fuel cap has not been open, then how can enough oxygen get into the fuel tank to enable ignition?

Well, the emptier a gas tank gets, the more fuel vapor and water vapor takes over the empty space. All water vapor (H2O) needs is high temperatures to seperate the O2 from the H2. Every time you get fuel at the gas station, you take in a small amount of water.

The sparks from the fuel pump could theoretically enable this process of breaking down the O2 from the H2, and a continuation of the sparks could literally cause the final ignition of enough O2. In addition to a potential ignition, the O2 also causes rust inside the fuel tank. So, leaving your fuel tank empty accelerates the rusting process of the tank. So, your fuel in the tank, does reduce the potential for rust.

In addition to the small amounts of water that get into your tank, your fuel is mostly made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms from a multi component distilation processes. Thus, each time you open your gas tank, enough oxygen gets into the tank, waiting for a free hydrogen radical in order to bond to form water vapor (H2O) or liquid water which settles at the bottom of your tank. This process is actually acute on hot summer days. So you get water in your fuel tank from two sources (1) from the gas station (2) from the bonding of atmospheric oxygen with free hydrogen radicals in the fuel tank.

With these sources of water vapor, it is easy to see how easily oxygen can be obtained for ignition. Again, all this is theoretical. Gas tanks are designed much better these days.

You and I both brother. The best I have been able to squeak out was about 22.3 on a trip to central California. Around town I am a consistent 13.5/14
