I've always wanted a sub in the Pathy, but I'm a sports guy and I'm always filling up the cargo area with my gear, folding down seats for more space, etc. A traditional sub box would get in the way and just be a big pain.

Does anyone have any examples/pics of setups in the Pathy using recessed boxes (like this), thin/slim subs that are out of the way, anything? I'm just looking for a little 10" sub or so to give the music a bit more kick, nothing gigantic.

I've thought of building a box that would run over top one of the wheel wells; or better yet, putting a slim sub inside the rear side panel. Both of these solutions mean the sub would be firing sideways... would that hurt the sound quality?

Most audio shops can build something similar for you at probably half the cost.

A lot of people make them as a hobby. I am a terrible woodworker, so I just pay people.

Previously, I had a Celica convertible and I had a custom enclosure made at a shop that fit underneath the top when it was down, so I didn't have to use trunk space. IIRC, it cost somewhere around $150 (not including sub, a JL 10w3). It was as thin as they could make it and had the correct amount of space for the sub.

The JL Stealthbox would be the way to go if you really need the space. I just had a conversation last night with a buddy and we both agree that JL makes the most diverse and musical subs.

I thought about buying a stealthbox when they were going for $350 a while back but decided I wanted something with a bigger sound. I fit an entire set of diving gear(double tanks), a professional U/W camera setup (Massive case for the housing, and really large camera bag) all in my ride with my 2x10" box still in place and seats in normal position. When you've got a really great sounding system you make your **** fit.

If I really need the room I've got a quick disconnect connector on my box and just pull it out. It's pretty light and easy to remove, plus it's build exactly to spec.

The Stealthboxes are expensive but they sound really good and the sub is included. BTW those pioneer shallow mount subs sound pretty janky. A few months ago I heard a set of new JL shallow mounts that are mind blowing, it's crazy how little air space they require and still put out a sound worth reckoning.

I know this post is about 2 months old, but I just saw that MTX has release a shallow series sub. You might want to check it out.
