Hey guys, I replaced my thermostat and its still not working right. What do you think about running it without a thermostat at all? I know that I won't have any heat but thats ok because I don't need it that much here in FL. Lemme know about his, I'm not sure if there are any other downfalls. Thanks

bypassing the thermostat isn't a fix to your problem, it'a avoiding it.Think about it.

if you pull your thermo, your engine'll probably never get the chance to warm up and your engine will constantly be running in "warm up" mode where the engine runs rich to try to warm itself up.

before installing a new thermo did you toss the sucker into a pot of boiling water to test if it was ok? If so and it opened, chances are it's not the thermo but some thing else is the matter in your system.

Could you also describe your problem with the thermo a bit more?

The problem that I am having is that the temp. gauge is going all the way too hot and then it will go down a little bit to say 3/4 and then it goes back up to hot again. I didn't place the thermo in boiling water before I put it in so it may be faulty, I don't know. I stuck a thermometer in the radiator while the car was running and it gets to like 200 degrees. before it starts going back down. So in other words it is not advisable to run my car w/out the thermostat in it? Thanks

does it hold the coolant or does it go away gradually...maybe it's a leak in your heater core.

I don't see any leaks in the driveway or anything but when I open the radiator cap I can't see any liquid, so I just add more to top it off. The resevoir stays on the min and max lines like it should but i don't know about the radiator. If it is the heater core can you just take it out? I hardly ever use heat anyways.

no, you need your heater core, you'd have to do some modification. If your windows fogged up, you'd be screwed. You have to be leaking if you keep adding coolant, try and figure out where, try a pressure test on the radiator and see if any comes out.

What else have you tried? Water pump, radiator cap, bled it PROPERLY (9/10 times overheating is causes by air in the system), bad hoses, leaky radiator, are you fans working?

If you seem to have to add a little coolant every day or two to keep it full, and youre having heating problems then you probably need a new water pump. There is a drip valve opening on the bottom of the water pump that will leak fluid when your seals and bearings are shot in your water pump. Replace that and see if it fixes your problem.
