would it be bad to run my rb20 without the thermostat? i have a small overheating issue due to having a stock 240 radiator on an rb20. i'm getting the koyo racing rad. as soon i can but i thought i could maybe run without the thermo till then. it only heats up after really driving hard. i can cruise it all night if i don't push it really hard. thanks

Unless your thermostat is sticking closed, removing it most likely won't help your overheating problem. You might have some luck running a higher pressure cap and water wetter in the mean time.

Running without any thermostat will "hurt" the motor in that it will take longer for it to reach operating temp, which will wear the bearings, rings, etc a little harder until it gets up to temperature. That's the theory anyway... I doubt it would cause any real damage running it like that temporarily.

Why not pick up a stock VG30DETT thermostat or the Nismo RB/VG30DETT thermo?

I always discourage running without a thermostat.

Just like mello said, if its stuck closed and you have no choice then run without one till you can get another.

But the thermostat is designed for cooling purposes by allowing the coolant in the radiator cool till the coolant in the motor heats up to exchange it with the cooler coolant in the radiator.

Without the thermostat the coolant has no time to cool in the radiator (because its going to be a free flowing system without) causing more over heating problems especially if your down here in the GA / FL area or anywhere hot.

Good luck

Its going to take a long time for your motor to heat up. But i don't see any problem with running without one for a while.

Also if your car is overheating try opening the windows and turning on the heat.

it's a brand new vg thermo and i don't believe it's stuck. i have checked it out a few times. i really just think it's the crappy 1990 radiator. the radiator is very new but its the smaller ka24e one. yeah i know the window trick, i had it bad last summer, hot outside with the heat on, no good. i am just wanting to cruise farther than around my neiborhood without wroorying to much about the hottness till i get my koyo. which should be soon, but the way bills having been piling up i don't know. so the consecence is i should not do this?

hey man, im running the stock 240 radiator just fine with my RB. Try a nismo t-stat, or try bleeding the system really good. i had overheating issues too, but it turned out it was a combo of bad t-stat and air in the system. I haven't had any issues at all since I changed the t-stat and bled the system. I daily drive my car and have gone on 5 hour road trips with it wihtout probs. if it's anything, it's the t-stat, and i wouldn't recomend running without it. good luck

Is it a genuine OEM Nissan thermostat or did you get it from a parts stores? There have been several local guys with RBs, KAs, and SRs that have had terrible luck with parts store stats. Id go OEM for sure, theyre not expensive at all.
