I am trying to pull the thermostat reservoir from my 1600 in order to replace the thermostat and the decaying gaskets. I've removed all of the bolts but I cant seem to remove the reservoir. The driver side stud appears to be free, but the passenger side stud seems to be hung up. I have been feeding penetrating oil down the stud and tapping it with a hammer, but I can't seem to free it up. Is there another bolt or that I need to remove or am I just battling years of electrolysis?
Thanks

Welcome aboard, Ali!

You're not doing anything wrong - those are notoriously a pain, and I've never known one to come off easily.

If you're planning to replace the studs (most do), feel free to heat it with a torch and remove it with a vice-grip.

Tapping the reservoir housing usually releases the grip, but some have been corroded quite firmly.

Here's a replacement: http://www.datsunroadster.com/SUB_SECTI ... .htm#SUPER

Also, be patient!

I soak them in penetrating oil for a few days before I try to remove it in case the aluminum is tired.

Thanks for the ideas and the confirmation that this thing is a beast to get off. Being new to the site and just getting my old roadster running, expect more simplistic questions as I muddle through things.

Success!! After plenty of oil and hours of tapping, I drilled a couple of holes into the stud housing, poured oil down the holes and finally freed the reservoir. New thermostat and gaskets and everything is back up and running.

If you haven't put the housing back yet, put some lithium grease on the long bolts that are in the head. That way in the future if you have to repeat the process it won't be as difficult. If it's already in, no biggie, just remember that trick for the future.

Thanks Andy,
I did grease up the studs before replacing. Seems like everything I touch is seized up these days so I am putting it on everything I replace at this point.
