Hi there ,

since 2 years , my car is heating up a little bit later than my friends cars , and cools down to 50C on lift-off at downhill driving. So today i checked out my thermostat and found this:

You can see there is a slightly gap between thermostat and sit. First of all i think , its ok . can buy a new thermostat . But after i get it to home , i tried to figure out why it stuck on there , and boiled it up . Thermostat is working well , opens when i heat it up no problem . Still i wonder why it is stuck in there .

After that , when i playing with it , i found that turning lower part of thermostat when holding the thread on front it moves. So i moved the plastic thing to where it belongs , and heated it up again. Works well as before .

But i wonder why this is happened? bad installation or what is it ?

And also can this cause a problem ?

You can see the thread on first picture is shorter when compered to this picture.

Testing.

is this gap OK ?

when "cold" the thermostat should be shut all the way... the rubber seal is supposed to seal the opening at the top of the thermostat
if there's a gap, the thermostat is said to be "stuck open"

in some rare cases, the rubber seal rots out (happened to BioSehnsucht)... usually happens when there is lack of coolant changes... electrolysis/added acidity in the coolant eats that rubber away

don't waste your time.. replace it with a QUALITY thermostat... OEM Nissan, NTCL (hard to find.. maybe NAPA brand is a rebox?), or Stant... don't waste your time/money on the Motorad Fail-Safe... more trouble than good!
what brand is this thermostat?

TheMAN is right. Just replace it, but don't just get anything. I've had no issues with Stant or Nissan thermostat, and my father in law's shop ONLY uses manufacturer thermostats because they're always failure free.
