Just recieved a set of Strup stainless headers and am considering thermo-wrapping them. I have not heard much of this on the forum so please chime in. Thanks.

Hello Wes, We do not recommend wrapping any Header; it holds in to much heat and cuts the life of the Header in half. Leave it as it is. The stainless tubing will be fine. My question was answered from the maker. I hope this helps anyone considering wrapping their headers. Wes

Nice info. Thanks. And keep us posted about the headers when they are installed. I am curious.

I've always heard it was a good thing, but I'm no mechanic, I never did bother wrapping them cause it looks so terrible... lol

Anyone else?

Wrapping the headers keeps the heat in the header, and out of the engine bay. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Also, Doing this keeps the headers at a higher temp, With no way to dissipate the heat that the headers are creating. Makes sense that this in turn would make the headers life span be cut in half.

It helps on turbo cars cause the hotter the exhaust the faster it flows but the downsideis it messes up the headers due to heat not escaping thru the thermo wrap.

check out the 350z forum - there is a *stuck* thread titled "doing twins right the first time"..... talks about thermal 'coating' for the exhaust manifolds and downpipes, also mentions thermal coating other parts that come in contact with the exhaust gas - valves, pistons, half the turbo....... FWIW

Coating and wrapping are different. Coating is usually in ceramic. Usually comes from the manufacturer like that. Ceramic headers are good at dissipating heat. Wrapping is an aftermarket product that you wrap around the headers. As said before it keeps the heat of the headers away from the rest of the car. But locks the heat of the headers in.

I'd say don't wrap 'em. Too much of a fire risk...you're better off getting them jet-hot coated.
