Thermal transmitter (Temp Gauge Sender)

My temp gauge intermittently drops all the way down, and sometimes stays down. I ran the diagnostics per the FSM, and the gauge tests good, so it looks like a wiring or sending unit problem.

However, I am having trouble finding the Thermal Transmitter that sends the temp to the gauge. I can't figure out from the FSM which side (or top or bottom) of the engine the diagram is trying to show me. I'm thinking maybe it is underneath, but there seems to be too many hoses and wires shown.

I found the 2-wire sender that goes to the ECM - it's FSM diagram is quite clear.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
