There any standard sources of alternator whine in a S14?

Did the big three and more with 4g.

New alternator

Optima Red battery

Ran 0/1g to the rear.

Ran 0/1g to the rear 'frame' rail

Running twisted pair interconnects down the opposite side.

At any gain setting on the amp I get whine.

It's not terrible but noticible with the radio silent at 3k rpms and up.

I will be doing a larger ground for my headunit (no amp in the head though). I also need to verify if the wires I ran into the doors didn't get cut and the wires to the tweeters aren't grounding (this is doubtful because the noise is in both left and right channels).

Anyone know if there is a typical source that causes alt whine in the S14?

I will be rechecking the interconnects again and double checking everything.

This is bugging me.

You will not be able to get noise out of some products especially if they are cheap. Unplug the rcas at the amp and see if you still have noise. On some amps, I have had to ground the rca shield to get rid of noise.

Nothing is cheap in my system really, I didn't go out and spend close to 5 figures but it's all decent (kenwood deck, quart amp, cdt/Image Dynamics). I can't rule out a defective component though.

I did do a check on the interconnects already, I will be rechecking them with a meter as well. It's not at my house right now.

I may try to ground the rca's and see if that helps...

It's just simple process of elimination. Unplug the RCA's at the amp if the noise goes away it's coming through the RCA's, plug them back in and go to the deck and unplug the RCA's, if noise is gone it's coming from the deck or through the decks power connections most likely.

If the noise doesn't go away when you unplug from the amp, the noise if coming in through the amps power wire or ground. Make sure you have a good ground on the amp(s) and make sure that if you are grounded to the body that the body ground strap up front at the battery or from the engine block to the body is attached properly.

An inline ground loop isolator can sometimes help but isn' the most ideal fix, more of a bandaid. If it's coming through the amps power wiring have you made sure your power wire is at lease 6-12" away from any ignition related wiring? Is your power cable at least 6-12"+ away from the RCA wires?

no it's not the basic stuff. I never heard of keeping your main power wire away from ignition stuff, but mine is not near any as much as can be prevented.

Anyway it's not where it's coming from anyway. I believe either my xo's are giving feedback to each other or picking up noise from either the cap or the power wire. I am going to try and separate them and move them away from the power/cap.

I disconnect the speaker leads from the amp and there is still whine, this is why I am suspecting the xo's are picking up the noise. Removing my tweeter leads from them stops the noise as well.

If your passive crossovers are near wiring harnesses or computers, they can pick up radiated noise. I have experienced two cars where I had to move the passive crossovers to eliminate the noise.
