The Whistling 2010 EX35: Driver-Side Mirror Noise Issue at Highway Speeds

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Just purchased 2010 EX 35 AWD Journey in December. Took it on the highway (drove about 55-65 mph) and there's a high pitched whistling noise.Took it back to dealer and technician said it was the mirror assembly after he test drove it and played with the mirror.

It took about a month to order the new part. Dealer installed it and said it was fixed, however the problem still exists!

Has anybody else had this issue with the driver side mirror? Is there a TSB on this?

HELP!

I actually did notice this but I haven't been driving my car daily and it only happends when the temperature is less than 20 degrees here, I thought my window was open a little bit and the wind was making that noise, I will have to recheck it but definitely heard the whistling noise.

Few people had the same issue on the 07G35 sedans. There was 3 source of the noise. 1 was the mirror the other 2 were the windows seal(weather strip) and the little triangle window on the reae door.

What I did to find out was taped the car. Step by step eliminated the possibilities. I taped down the mirror so the air couldn't go thru. I still had the issue. Than I taped down the door around and got in from the passanger side. Still had the isue. Taped down the rear door and windows. Noise was gone. Than I did tape down smaller pcs of the door at times to locate the exact spot. That's how I've got to the triangle window.

Went to the dealer and told them what the problem is and how I knew it. They replaced the rear triangle window and the noise was gone.

You can use the tape method. It is worth to try.

Hope this helps and good luck. BTW some people will looking at you on the HWY how the hell you get in the car when it is taped down. LOL

I have a '10 EX and it whistles like that. I figured it's the mirror--seems like where the sound is coming from.It hasn't really bothered me much, but I'm going in for an oil change this weekend, maybe I'll mention it and see what they say.

Brought into dealer again. They said they test drove other EX35s and they hear the same noise in those cars. Therefore, there is NOTHING THEY CAN DO and told me to contact Infiniti Consumer Affair to open a case regarding the problem driver side mirror assembly.

If you are experiencing this same issue, please contact Infiniti Consumer Affair hotline to open a case. Hopefully, they'll issue a TSB if enough people report this matter:

I just traded my BMW for EX35...I have same whistling issue...I brought it to dealer this wknd and they know the issue but could not do anything abt it. I was offered to test drive 2 other EXs and both had same issue. Only recommendation is to call or write NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS. Lame excuse I say.

Mine doesn't whistle, but every time I drive on the highway I hear Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner.

Seriously... my 2010 doesn't have any whistling at all.

Hey folks,

I know this is an older post but was wondering if anyone had any new thoughts on the matter. I have just under 40K on my 08, yes, I am in love with this car! I am getting the same type of issue right about at 60mph. It is not loud enough to be heard on a phone call but loud enough for me to get annoyed!! :( I am definitely attributing it to the driver window seals or the windshield/A-pillar seal. I am going to call the dealer to see what they say and then call consumer affairs as this thread advised.

Any new information on this? I have a couple of friends that want to join the EX family and this little annoyance might keep me from giving my thumb's up!

Thanks and hope all is well!

Jim

I had this issue on my G35 coupe but the noise came from the passenger's rear window. It was somewhat common at the time and the dealer took care of it - essentially added more materials.

Now on the 01 acura MDX's, there was an similar issue that turned out to be due to a hollow A-pillar.

As the post above noted- find the location. Once found, a fix usually isn't too hard.

Good luck- I'll be keeping my ears open next month when we get ours.

Mine MY10 has that whistling sound too on highway speed. Had no idea what the cause is but sounds like somewhere around the driver's front door area. But if I put my fingers on the power window switches, I could feel cold air coming out from the gap on the switches. I guess the door it's tightly sealed inside hence wind would get inside the door and looking for holes to get out. Not sure if this 'hollow door' is the cause of the whistling though.

In the world of new cars I have to say some minor turbulance isn't too bad. I'll take a look and see if there has been a redesign. If there has not been a redesign than I would not expect a replacement mirror to make a difference.

If this is enough to sour your impression of the EX you must not be factoring in the pros the vehicle has. The EX does not fit everyones needs but IMO there are many more ups than downs.

Owners of the 08 can attest to Infinitis customer service when it comes to common annoyances like the fuel pump, steering rack, and steering column tsbs to resolve non safety related noises. They are better than the majority of the competition when it comes to response to noises. That is from behind the scenes at least.

I wouldn't let that minor think make you rethink your purchase. Some people have it some don't, I get it from time to time, but you can't here it unless the radio is off, LOL! Even then it comes and goes. There could be far worse, like the problems I had with my 2008 Accord V6, google VCM issues... For which I dumped it.

got my ex about a week ago, tonight was the first time i took it on the highway, at about 65-70 mph i started hearing a faint high-pitched whistling noise but it was tough to distinguish it from the general/normal road and wind noise, but then I rolled the window down - wow - i could hear it very clearly and it was very annoying, not that i ever drive with my windows down on the highway, but this is still a major drag and now i notice it with the windows up - i bought some of that compressed air duster and sprayed it around the mirror to try and isolate where the sound was comming from, i think it may be the crease where the mirror folds inwards, im gonna try sealing it up with tape or something and see if that helps :(

I know this is quite an old topic but today during my service again I had them take another look at it. The rep told me they heard it and "tightened" the mirror, I wonder if this could actually make a difference? I hope so, if not not a big deal but it would put another at ease for me. Will let you guys know tomorrow morning when I pick up my car.

I just bought a 2011 EX35 and can confirm that the whistling noise is STILL THERE at any speed over 60mph. It's highly annoying... I haven't taken it into the dealer yet because I've only had it for a week. zarzar, did that "mirror tightening" method work for you?

Somewhat. On the second attempt of asking them to take a look at it during the last service they gave it a "tightening up", for a day and a half it was better. Now it whistles as usual so I do my best to ignore it, I've gotten used to it at this point. I still think its coming from somewhere on the driver side mirror.

My 2011 EX Journey does not have the whistling at any speed so it must not be a design issue. I tested it today with windows up and windows down at speeds from 50 to 70 and nothing coming from the mirrors or anywhere else. I have the Deluxe Touring Package that has the reverse tilt-down feature if that makes a difference in mirror design (?)
