Well now that the legal stuff is in order, I can tell you all my sad story.

As some of you know, I purchased an '05 Z33 Base with some Nismo goodies on it.

Well at some point in its history, a previous owner apparently had a remote start installed. When this was done, all the safeties were bypassed. None of this was known to me or to the dealership.

On Wednesday May 29th the Z was parked outside my apartment when an unknown fault caused the remote start to engage. The car was parked in 1st gear with the parking brake on. The car overpowered the parking brake and started, taking off across the parking lot, striking a parked car, traveling through an empty space, striking another car, and then finally jumping the curb and striking a building. The impact with the first car did significant damage to the passenger side. The impact with the 2nd car caused minor damage to the driver's side. The impact with the house finished off the front.

This is how I found the car, still trying to crank over.

And this is the aftermath.

I was already in talks with City Auto about that car, as they had listed it as a Nismo, while it was not. We were scheduled to meet on the 30th to renegotiate the price. After the investigation, which they paid for, City Auto offered to buy the car back for 100% of my cost. They paid off the loan, refunded 100% of my down payment and the cost of the warranty. It is worth noting that they did not have to do anything for me, as all used car sales in Tennessee are As-Is. They could have said "oh well" and left it at that.

They went out of their way to make things right. I had expected to keep the car, but when they made that offer I decided it was probably for the best. The Mrs and I had planned to replace the Civic anyways, so we decided to purchase another car from City Auto. Rather than finance another sports car and buy a cheap daily, we opted to finance a nice daily and I'll just buy another old sports car. It just makes more sense to have a dependable daily. So with that in mind we came home yesterday with an 09 Versa S Hatch. 67k miles on it, 6 spd. Paid $8,990 for it.

The interior is a little rough for it's age, but nothing bad. There are a couple spots on the seats that a good steam clean will take out, and a burn mark in the rear seat from a cigarette. Other than that it has a good number of scratches in the plastic, but the price was good so I decided to take it. I'll do something about it later.

Despite the interior the body is in great shape. The only flaws being some dents in the fuel door and the front bumper has been tweaked a bit like it bumped something at low speed.

Image

She's a good looking, good running little car. I plan to do a few little tweaks here and there, nothing major. I'm going to save that money for the next car we buy. Hopefully a clean Zenki S14.

TL;DR - The Z was possessed. It went crazy and ran down a Toyota, a Saturn, and a house. Dealer bought it back and I bought a Versa.

Wow, sorry to hear about that knife through a mans pride. Hey atleast they refunded it to what sounded like a no hassle deal. You'll find another in time.

Kinda surprised this doesn't happen to more remote-start equipped cars.

Definitely crummy news, but way cool that the dealership backed you on it.

And the dependable daily means you can make a project of whatever sportscar you go with, so that works out nicely, too.

Yup, they were great. That was their first offer. I didn't even have to haggle or argue. It was better than I was hoping to get after negotiation.

I know. I actually read about a lot of remote start cars starting themselves. The difference being that they are all automatics and just sit there idling.

Yeah my options are open for cars now. I'm gonna save up a bit more money and buy something nice, then unload the Civic when I'm ready to buy. Also this way I can make sure the Versa is solid and ready for it's daily driver duties. Gotta have a way for the wife to commute.

In the end I'm just glad it all worked out.

Wow, I didn't know a Z would have enough torque to not die after being started in gear. Impressive!

Seriously though....that's really unfortunate. :( It's only been a few weeks right? Kudos though to the dealer, that's a stand up thing to do that you wouldn't expect from a place like that.

Holy crap! I can only imagine how nasty it would have been if the Z launched itself at a pedestrian.

Very glad to hear that City Auto took care of you and made it right. I wish more dealerships were as ethical as they have been to you.

WOW! Crazy story man! Good thing no one got in the way of the moving car- especially since it had enough momentum to keep going.
Very impressed about the dealership, give those guys some good press or referrals.

I had multiple 5 speeds with remote starts, never had an issue.

BUT, this is why ALL my manuals are never left in gear....ever.

Slow your roll. I was only saying why I never park in gear. Do what you want, just adding to the story with conversation.

My S12 SE had the remote start in-gear and the clutch pedal switch by-passed as well, but I always had the luck that the VG30E couldn't ever overpower the brake or the concrete bump I parked in front of...

Now it's the first thing I check on any car I buy. Too bad it's not on most people's list.

Funny story, on a Frontier I traded in, it had remote start and was 5 speed. I told them many times again about the remote start and never leave in gear..blah blah. I got told a couple weeks later that the wash guy parked it, left it in gear and hit the start button when putting the keys away. It started, drove through a brick wall and landed 7 feet down at the bottom of the ditch. I lol'd, said I told you so and drove off enjoying my brand new Pro4x Titan.

Not telling someone what to do, but again, that is why I never leave my manuals in gear. Just to clarify though, I do live in Texas and it is pretty flat so the parking brake is more than enough around here. You hilly people might need the extra hold.

That sucks man! Glad you got everything squared away though. That was awesome of City Auto to take care of you like that.

Aftermarket alarm installs can be SO sketchy. My girlfriend just bought a 240 from a friend of mine. It has the viper smart start "professionally installed" (I was there when my friend took it to the shop). When we bought it the alarm was doing some really funky stuff, so I decided to just go in there and pull it out and re-install it later. What I saw was terrifying. Wires just twisted together, no heat shrink, just electrical tape everywhere, there was 1 12v hot wire feeding like 5 different things, it was terrible. He paid like $200 for that install. Seeing this made me an even harder believer in doing things on your own. My first alarm installation was in my car, and it is 300% better than the crap "professional installation" on my girlfriend's car.

Protip for remote start in manual cars: Most remote start systems will give you a "kill wire" to wire up to your e-brake. The idea is the remote start wont work if your ebrake is down. Instead, wire that up to your transmission, either the 5th gear switch or the reverse switch. If you want to leave your car in gear when you park, leave it in the gear you wired up.

Top gear top tip right there!

Kudos to City Auto in Memphis. I knew they were good, but holy crap I didn't know they were THAT good! I'll be sure to tell everyone I know going car shopping to go there first. Hell, I might even look there again next time I'm in the market to buy a car, even though I've moved away!

I just wrote a review on cars.com for my Miata purchase.

Sounds like a guy on there got hosed by a salesman that truly didn't give a crap:
I drive from Michigan to Memphis to purchase a Sprinter van. I was told that the vehicle didn't need anything. I asked a lot of questions since I live 12 hrs away. I was told that all service was up to date, and that there was just "normal wear and tear" for a 2008 model. My wife and I drove down to purchase the vehicle. The outside was excellent! All was good until we looked inside. The speakers were ripped out, the air vents were ripped out. The seats were cut and the plastic seat backs were kicked in. Someone even scratched a swear word into the plastic seat back. Normal wear and tear? I told the dealer that this was not normal wear and tear. He told me that I should have asked him to look INSIDE the van. I told him that was HIS job. He also lied about the tire conditions and there was a warning light illuminated on the dash for the entire test drive--so much for not needing anything. We had been ready to purchase, but left instead. Watch out! This is a very high volume dealership. THey were very proud of selling 600+ vehicles a month, but you definitely feel like cattle, not a person. They could care less about you, they just want to get you in the door and will lie to get you there
City Auto's response was apologetic and didn't disagree, basically the exact opposite of a response you usually get now-a-days
We apologize for your poor experience and would like the opportunity to address it directly. We encourage you to contact our customer service manager, Priscilla Guy or our general manager, William Brigance at 901-377-9502. Your comments help us to continually improve our service through coaching and development of our staff. This is not how our staff is trained to care for customers.
Very impressed. I wish Corky Bell and BEGi/Bell Engineering could take lessons from them.
