As the title say i have a strong scent of fuel comming from my car it is so bad that the scent gets on my clothes. It was present before but now it has gotten worse.

I have no smoke coming from my car but i do have a clicking noise coming from my engine and a ruff idal where the rpm continues to fluctuate by about 200 rpm never leveling off. I don't know if that is related to this problem but i reall need some advice as to what maybe causing this or what to check out. I just need a start in finding the problem.

Please help the intoxicating smell of gas is rotting my brain cells dude.

Check your injector o-rings, fpr and filter, or it could possiby be the gasket on the pump/sender bracket thats in the gas tank. Try to narrow down where its coming from.

Mine used to smell like raw fuel when I turned the heater on , I had to find out what it was cause it was january here ( about 15-30deg average) Well I traced it down to a slight exhaust leak between the turbo and the 02 housing, I guess the exhaust went up the firewall and into the cowl which go sucked into the interior. But just an idea,

Does it just smell at a low speed or at idle? Have you changed your plugs lately? Your 02 sensor new or old, and is it hooked up correctly? also have you ever cleaned off or replaced your H2o temp sensor?

Mine did that once too, I was driving then out of no where it was just a strong smell of gas through the vents. Come to find out my number 1 injector was leaking and spraying fuel everywhere. The bolt on the fuel that holds it to the intake manifold had backed out. So like damesta said before I would check all of the stuff he had stated.

i see this problem alot on S13s when a walbro install is done, most people dont replace the oring seal on the sending unit lid and it lets fumes escape and fill the cabin, mine has this problem along with a friends car. we have the gaskets, just never remember to put them in till we are at the track and the coordinators are giving us hell because they can smell it when near the car. we have checked for leaks and have not found any.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who forgot the seal. I had to replace my fuel pump and gas tank due to rust. But my car would just fume, it didn't run rough as "Burnout 180" claims. It may be a combo of the things stated.

I also had a similar problem. I pop the hood open and found the clamps that were holding the hoses to two fuel lines at the back of the manifold werent good at all. Replace them and everythings good.

also be sure to use fuel hose intended for fuel injection, not just plain old "fuel hose" thats only good for low pressure carbs. I know from experience..

as for your other problem, can you tell where in the engine bay the clicking is coming from? thats very very odd.. is it really loud, or just barely audible? could be injector clicking, perhaps it is related..

Early in the morning i started the car and put my hand in between the valve covers and my exaust manifold in (picture 1) and i felt air coming from somewhere in that area this is also the area where the clicking noise is loudest at idal. I then reved the motor several times and then stopped suddenly and a short puff of white smoke came from there. Do you think that my exaust manifold gasket is leaking or my valve cover seal or could it be something else?

Also i see some oil residue closer to the firewall in this picture i don't know if this is related.

Also the idal problem was happening before but when i took off the section after the sensor underneath the car of my exaust, to fix the leak in the muffeler the idal problem has gotten worse but i havn't put it back on yet to see if the problem gets better. Here i a pic of my exaust without the muffeler on it.

and yes my O2 sensor is new and no i haven't cleaned my water temp sensor or ever messed with my fuel pump it is the stock on which came on my car when i got it from Japan.

Thankyou for all the support on fixing this.

Sounds like a cam cover gasket to me. If you feel air coming from there and oil is on your firewall, odds are its from there. If the exhaust manifold gasket was bad, it would just cause a leak (quite noticable ticking @ all times), no oil should come from there. The head gasket would leak coolant, and you would probaly notice if your oil lines are leaking on the turbo. The white smoke may be oil dripping through the gasket and hitting your manifold, burning off white. I wouldn't know of any other way for oil to get there.

New cam cover gaskets are quite cheap. Go to NAPA or Autozone, and get the 88' Pulsar NX 1.8 L. There will be 2 one them of course. You don't need to put any sealant on the gasket. Just fit it and tighten down the cam covers evenly. Good Luck!

I fixed the ticking. It was a small exaust leak coming from the manifold to block connection this also has seemed to stop the scent.

Also i found a large boost leak which i fixed at the same time. However now i have a problem. Now when i let off the gas it idals okay until about 5 seconds then the revs drop and sometimes it recovers but most of the time it cuts off. If i just start my car and let it run it runs fine but if i go for a drive it does this rev thing when i let of the gas its areal pain but way better than inhaling exaust.

Anyone have a clue as to what i should check this i currently my only problem. Also i put my muffeler back on

Are you running a recirculating B.O.V or Apexi SAFCII? Without one of these set ups, your car will die down w/ an atmospheric B.O.V.

i have a hks super sequential and its not recirculating. so that may be the problem i'll tighten the screw on the bov which controlls how much it opens and how quickly it closes and see if it changes anything

As my brother stated (89ClubK's) you need a SAFC I or II or Recirc. your BOV. There's a Recirc. kit avail. for the HKS SS. Your blowing all your air and the engine is going really rich, overloading it and causing it to die. We've only seen maybe a couple of cars (non-Nissan's) that used an Atoms BOV and didn't need a SAFC or other Air-Fuel controller. Tightening the screw won't help. Then you could cause compressor surge when you romp the car and let off, but it has nowhere to go. (If the BOV doesn't open at all) If it does blow-off it'll still die. Our friend with an SR and HKS SS has to run a SAFC. He has the 1 series, but it gets the job done. Hope that helps.
