Hello! I have been trolling on here forever and finally decided to join in the fun!

I have previously owned a '89 Hatch(sold), beat up '93 hatch (built, drifted then sold), and '96 (still own, got for my wife).

I missed my hatch so much I now have another 1989 Hatch shell in great condition, just no front end!

Plans:
Clean her, paint engine bay since engine isn't in yet, make a nice DD and weekend slider.

I have a KA24DE endine and transmission already awaiting the bay. In two years I'll turbo it once she is over 25 years old!

I started tearing what was left of her down, a nice family of rats had been living in a jacket pocket full of sunflower seeds.
At least the shell was used while it sat at the PO's location!

Got the rest of my 5 speed parts, and Agency Power SS line
Image

Used aircraft remover, hand sanded, painted then baked a spare VC that'll go on her KA

PO cut a hole through the battery tray (and washer bottle). Had to take care of the cancer!
sealed the rust too. Looks much better, going to paint over it. Not worried about bondo or any other s***.

Got a new rad (I always ask for stickers!!)

Cleaned up my harness, spent a week just trying to source the damn lower harness!!
Image

Took a snack break
Image

Got some spare 1/4" steel and made engine lift points. Will paint them eventually (glimps of the dirty KA)

Cleaned off a lot of crud on the engine. Just had a small VC gasket leak up front. Looks great so far and will be corrected when new VC goes on! Also I got tired of seeing long vac lines going nowhere. So I blocked those.

Wife helped me clean out trunk. Very minimal surface rust in some spots; just tons of crud! I got truck bed liner and sprayed everything back there. *Still wet in the pic. Looks clean and solid now! Looks so good I will get to the rest of the car eventually.

Got my free ultra-JDM air freshener! Thanks DNA Motoring!! :bigthumb:

That's as far as I have gotten so far! Spent a lot of time fixing up my S14: new rad, joints and tie rods&ends, STAGG shocks and lowering springs, good tires and alignment, new a/c compressor, dual exhaust. She runs purrrfectly now!!

Next on the list:
Finish engine bay and install engine
Locate a Silvia front end!! (got drivers fender)
Get car running and pass emissions
re-do all suspension parts
In two years hit 350whp!!

You MIGHT want to remove the sound deadening and re-spray the trunk.... If you're OCD aboud doing an entire job, or anything.

If you're not able to do the dry ice and hammer method, When I was removing some to prime my rust up, I found that carb cleaner or engine degreaser melts it, just wear a mask and gloves or something, and have good ventilation. And a paint scraper, and lots of rags.

I'm fine with leaving the sound deadener in. I'm not making my car much lighter or anything. But, YES, by the time I get to doing the rest of the interior I may end up removing it all. I have a air hammer and chisel, comes off quickly!

Yeah, I don't care about the few pounds, but when I do my interior I plan on removing it, just because it bothers me to leave things less neat than they could be, when I'm freshening everything else up.

I also can't get over the feeling that nissan just ditched excess road tar in my trunk :gotme

Thanks! I don't plan on ever letting this one go!!

It may take me a while to get her going because I don't plan on buying any cheap parts. I want this one to be done properly, then while I drive her around I'll be rebuilding another KA24DE to throw in and turbo.

Just got my engine bay painted up! Used rattle can hi-temp semi-gloss black enamel. Looks 1000% better!

Then I did my bumper support in truck bed liner

Paint is still drying in the pics, not the best in the world but should last several years!!

nice!! i hope you layed down a couple more coats for the engine bay. it looks like you need a couple more because i see "spots" on it. i did mine the same but in plum purple. Looking good so far!! i might do my bumper support the same way you did before i tidy everything up!

I put like five light layers all over, on the strut towers and wheel wells I made it a lot heavier. That is why it is all spotty there.

I know I'm no rattle can pro :P

Thanks for the replies!!!

Painted one of the fenders. It went from flaking flat-black primer on faded red to glossy black. It definitely needs a lot of wet sanding, but it already looks 100 times better than it did!

Finished the passenger fender as well! It had some nasty cracks and dents on the lower parts that went down to the bare metal. I didn't bother Bondo'ing it yet b/c this paint is just temporary so when I finish her I won't have to drive around with mix-matched colored panels.

Sanded, Some primer filler, more sanding then paint
