The sensor that goes into the exhaust, what it is called??

The one that's located underneath the car, looks like some kind of temperature sensor that bolts directly to the piping of the exhaust.

What is it called? Is it crucial to have it connected?

O2 sensor or lambda sensor. And yes, good to have it connected. The car often run ok with disconnected sensor but the air/fuel control is bad.

if its a jdm car, and the sensor is going into the CAT then no, you dont need it (i cut mine off when i put the test pipe in, never had a problem)

the O2 sensor is in the engine bay, not underneath

I thought the O2 sensor is connected to the turbo elbow??

My car ran like crap after I changed the exhaust, with that sensor unplugged. It misfire and occasionally cuts out on me.

Yah its a JDM car, I think it connects to either the CAT or the Exhaust piping.

I left my unplugged after the installing new exhaust, but now the car runs horribily before it warms up. I wonder what that sensor is.

I have a JDM car too and I removed the temperature sensor as well.

I'm not 100% sure what it';s for but I'm pretty sure it's just to detect the temperature of the cat.if you'll notice one of your dash lights is a picture of a square with heatwaves.I'm pretty sure it's just to warn you that the cat is overheating.

well, truth be told, it was never cold (ever) when i had the car. so that may be it, if its running crappy , you might want to tap some threads in your new exhaust (im assuming its catless) and stick the sensor in (or find out what it wants to read, then stick in a resistor or something)

but if its the one that goes thru the floor under teh LH seat, then it went to the CAT originally
