This is the first thread ive created in a while because I think it will make for interesting discussion.

what is the effective rpm range of an engine while the car is drifting, presumably on a windy track.

it seems that it would be in the higher ranges of 3.5k to 6k

but this thread is too quiet to know for sure

I would think that It would depend on the engine. I drift in a mid-to-high RPM mostly. But I sometime's like to get it into a mid-RPM range just because my stock exhaust mani will glow bright pinkish-red after running it hard. I hear some people bouncing off the rev limiter!

I would think with a motor with more low end torque like an ls1 would drift good at a mid rpm range.

So all in all I would guess its some where in your motor's power-band.

It was really depends on what gear you're in, lower gear, higher rpms and the opposite for higher gears... You'll probably spend most of the time in the higher rpms with the lower liter motors, close to if not on the rev limiter...

when i usually drift ( sadly i am not able to go to tracks that often) i usually stay on higher rpms and or try to brake the wheels loose by down shifting and then i go on the next gear and balance the power in the mid rpms

so the engine, is working hardeven in 2nd and 3rd gear. between 4.5k - 6k rpm

I brough this up, because most of the NICO buildthreads are dedicated to the garrett gt2871r

it would seem that a top mount setup is better for drifting, open highways, and autoX tracks with decent straightaways

topmount turbos setups are underrated waiting unitl 3k rpm for full boost isnt unreasonable

Most top mounts will spool in the mid to late 3's some even in early 4's. It's still not bad at all. EVO's spool in the mid 3's stock. People just whine because the T25 spools so fast.

Top mount is such a bland statement. It just dictates where the turbo sits. What justifys spool is the turbo size, runner design, and turbine housing (T2, T3, T4, etc.). For drifting it wouldnt be smart to go anything larger than 3071R on the SR20. Maybe GT30R if you had a stroked SR22. I think a 2871R T3 setup would be very responsive.

top mount is very general you're right, Im pointing at turbos with the t3 foot print and the added boost that goes with them.

gt3071r is a good mid to high rpm turbo, so I guess that answers.

Also you can go Twin Scroll setup which gives an increase in midrange tq as well.

yeah, and I am also realizing that the best, and most affordable way to do a twin scroll manifold is to make it yourself.

but what I was getting at, is the downsides of a big spooling gt30 turbo or even a t3, aren't as severe as people say.

In fact they may be better suited for drift, and highway driving.

As to where a gt28 is better for light to light, and autoX'ing.

Yep, you can weight transfer in neutral and still drift. Because of my 2-way lsd I can brake and go into a drift. But I love to do long drifts so Im always on throttle.

wait... im slow, so you're at 4500, you kick the clutch and hold the throttle - the motor revs up to 6000

as you release the clutch and re-engage the rear wheels you drop back down to 4500...
