I was wondering since this is my first true sporty car, if it is normal to get the rpm's above 5-6000. I realize this shouldn't be done all the time, but when you get the itch for some spirited driving. I guess my question is if the engine is made to rev that high on a fairly frequent basis? It's so hard not to just mash the gas and watch the tach fly like crazy, you know what I mean? Thanks

Trust me...it's fine. Take her to 7000RPM and then shift for best results.. you'll burn more gas (of course) but this car shines in high RPM's. That's where the most hp and torque kiks in.

Welcome to the world of sports cars!

+1 for the Whizz! let 'her hang at 7k and shift...you might need to take of the VDC to get the full effect. If you notice that the throttle is being cut, that's why.

Enjoy the car and post up some pics!!

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I was hoping to here. I'm gonna give it a a try the next time I'm in it. Oh yeah, does it matter that it has only about 1000 miles on it? Here are a couple very large pics:[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

YES!!!

Break her in right. There are many different schools of thought on this subject. But the way I break in a new vehicle is stay below 5k RPM and no cruise control until after the first oil change to synthetic at 1000-1200 miles. After that drive normal...but don't hit the rev-limiter until after the second oil change at around 2500 miles.

btw, very nice G!

Just to put this out there, the factory says the break in period is 1200 miles and that you shouldn't let the RPM's get over 4000. Thats was I did, it was hard, but I figured better be safe than sorry down the line

Ahh gotta love that High Displacement VQ

Quick FACT - - - -

If you get close to redline your throttle body valve \ manifold slowly shuts. It will never be open fully when your above 4-5K RPM unless you have ECU mods

And dont worry if you get really close to redline , the TOP redline for our cars are around 650 RPM higher than limit , but hitting the limit will hurt it if done a lot ....

I was always taught to drive it like you stole it for the first 1000 miles to set the rings? Thats how ive always done to motors i have built for domestic and import cars ive built. I didnt how ever do that to mine, but i did not keep it under 4k. I would bring it up to 5-6 k for the first 500 then 7k around 1k

I went by the break in that they recommend from infiniti, I'm sure they are conservative with it, but I followed the factory break in with my last car, a 2000 chevy cav. that I had for 7 years and 100000 miles with no problems, so I figured why not, I've never really been into cars untill I got my G so I'm still learning

Sorry, stupid newbie question here, but what is a VDC?

Thanks

^ VDC is the thing that keeps your n00b *** outa the wall...

"Vehicle Dynamics Control"

I shift about 6k from every stop light.

a set of tires lasts me 10k miles.

VDC is Infiniti's name for stability control.

Thank you everyone for all of the great responses and advice. I read about the 1200 mile break in period in the manual, but that is just about impossible for me I've found, although I have been babing it mostly thus far. Is it necessary to change the oil at 1200 miles? Also, is synthetic the way I should go? Do you guys/gals change your own oil or who do you have do it so it is done properly? Thanks for the compliment Joe, I love this car!

The reason why we change the oil at 1200 is to get the initial metal shavings from all of the parts that set from the factory. The oil used is typically a special oil for this purpose. To be safe, I also change the oil/filter at 2500 miles to get everything out.

Oil changing isn't that hard...get a set of ramps, and it will be easy. The only thing is that you should remove the plastic air shroud to not make a mess (it has like 20 bolts )

The question on Synthetic is a hot one, but I've always used Royal Purple (which is a great synthetic oil).

First time I changed mine, I did it with the shroud in place and made a HUGE MESS!

I think the only debate over Synthetic should be brand.....It supposed to reduce wear & increase HP cause it's slickier.

I remember reading in a mustang mag. where they took a mustang and changed all fluids to synthetic and got 7HP more at the rear wheels.

Heh I cut the shroud so I can change it without taking off the 20 bolts... it's crazy hard to have to do that every time.

There have been studies done saying that every motor should be driven to its redline at least once everytime its turned on to help blow out carbon buildup on the valves and such. I don't know if this is true or not for sure, but i do it just in case :-) But in any case all modern engines can be reved up all the way through the ban w/o having to worrya bout anything. They build in rev limiters so you don't over rev and hurt anything. Only reason not to go all the way through the rev range is to save gas.

Not a bad idea! Will have to look at expanding that little hole they put there. I normally zip them off with my cordless drill, but still a pain!

Hitting the limit causes a sudden cutoff of gas, sometimes that WILL hurt the valves \ Plugs \ Pump \ injectors ...

I used to brake my cars in lightly but not anymore. With my last 3 cars I drive like everyday from day one. I did not have a single problem with them. They used to be bad but these new cars are a lot better than 10-20 years ago. These can handle it. I hit the redline too many times since day one.

That's how it is for me with my last 3 cars. I know I know. Just don't kill me for it because I do it my way.
