Is Infiniti discontinuing the G20 now that the G35 is here to stay? What's Infiniti's entry-level vehicle now? I always assumed the I30 would be the first vehicle to disappear from the Infiniti line-up being that it's almost identical to the Maxima but what gives? G20's a pretty popular cars around here.

I could be wrong, but I thought the I35 was being phased out. They have not made the G20 and I/J30 for MY2003 and 2004. I think the entry level Infiniti is the G35 Sedan.

Maddie - G20 has been gone since 2001 (final model year). I suppose the entry level car is the I35 (based on price).

Bud - the I30 became the I35 in 2002 with the addition of the VQ35DE, and it is indeed still available in 2003-2004, and is less expensive than the G35 sedan. A new I35 is a LOT of car for the money, as they can be had for under MSRP.

Looking at the current I35, It still looks basically the same as it has since 2000, but the Maxima is all new this year. Are they still using the JDM Maxima everywhere else but the USA, and making something different for here? I know in other countries, the Maxima always looks like the I30/35 here...

Well that's a bummer. Up until this year, half of the Infiniti's I saw were G20's. I30's came a close second. I don't know what the demographic is, but of all the Infiniti cars I'd guess the G20 was most popular with women. It's been around so long it's sad to see it let go so unceremoniously. :(

Wasn't there even a 2 year (97 & 98) hiatus?

I agree it's a VERY nice car, I was even looking for one as a winter car (FWD), but was given an Acura, so I stopped looking. The motor in that thing is begging to do more. A '96, 5sp with black leather would be a fun car.

One watch out (from Q45Tech) is that the head sits flat/level, therefore the oil doesn't always drain down.

I guess I was looking at Yahoo's pricing for the base G35 model to make that call.

Keep in mind that almost NOBODY has "base" G35's. The one w/o leather is almost impossible to find.

G20 is the OG.

G35 is the new hotness.

And I'd like to see a G45. But I wonder how handling and balance would be with a large V8 up front.

Personal opinion, the SR20 powered G20 is too small scale for where Infiniti is going, the Sentra SE now bears the SR. Marque differentiation.

The 99> SR20's had roller tipped rockers, other than that, not too many changes since 91, save for the lousy 96 cams.

They are susceptible to oil issues if not maintained meticulously, cam oil tubes in particular, the early models suffered from oil starvation at the cams when the tubes clogged, and as we all know, $hit rolls downhill.

There was an oil supply tube upgrade, in 96, I think, to help in this department. Excellent preventive measure for lo port or high port SR's.

I always figured that the I30/I35 were the big money makers for Infiniti, it would make sense though if they're being phased by the G35

That's interesting, there are no G35's sold in Canada with a non leather interior (or heated seats). Their isn't even an option to order one. The base model sold up here has got leather. I checked at the dealer while I was car shopping for the wife. I surmise, that is because Acura and Lexus sell a couple of models up here with leather standard on the base (these models from Acura and Lexus are not sold in the U.S.) that are in the same price range as the G35.

Guys, any new Infiniti, under $30,000 is amazing!

Look at the Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevy Malibu, Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable, Chrysler 300, or whatever other cars are in the same respective class.

The I35 has much better build and appearance.

The G35 has much better performance and stability.

Take your pick.

Right now, the G35 is out-selling the I35, because of the RWD, and the salesmen are pushing the car.

The I35 is, IMO, prettier, nicer inside, and more plush.

I never really got the G20. I have driven a few, because, in 2000, that was the loaner car of choice, for the dealerships. Pretty, but NO power. Great for college girls, or children of rich people, who didn't want their kids in a toyota. (Please don't bash me for this comment).

Now, it is mostly I35's, and a few G35's for the Q owners to use, as loaner cars.

As long as the trend is for more power, and performance, Infiniti will continue to move their cars in that direction. Hence, the RWD platform, with a twinkling of AWD (G35X).

What I really miss, is the M30 convertibles.

The M30, in two-tone pearl. Those were nice. We'll see how the G35 looks topless.

A few corrections: the 99 did NOT have roller rockers. This was introduced in 00+. Also, the G20 was available til 2002 with the sport edition. Also, if you woulda visit g20.net, the majority of the members were men. Women are scarce on the site. =P

Scuse me, :D introduced in 99 for the 00 model year, same as saying the LSD went away in 97 for the 98 200SX SE-R or Sentra SE-L. semantics, but I concede. My mistake.

Didn't notice it's passing in 02, that's too bad, it was a cute car.

We did a lot of prep on one owned by Henry Perez, featured in the TOYO booth at NOPI 2000 (2001?) utilizing, among other things, *the* original CF rear spoiler from Danny Aiello's 2000 (?) Champion BTC & non-application Koni Yellows with GC coilovers.

The online community is but a fraction of total ownership though, with respect to gender. I bet it's more than 20:1
