When Obama was first being connected with the good Rev Wright and people were trying to imply that people like Wright and Ayers and Rezko, etc were Obama's "people", I decided to see if I could find out exactly who his people were. If not Wright & Co, then who? This was last spring or summer.
I decided to see who was running his campaign, who was advising him, etc. I discovered that most of his campaign team came from former South Dakota Senator and Democratic leader Tom Daschle. David Ploufe, David Axelrod, Steve Hildebrand, Dan Pfeiffer and Pete Rouse all came from Daschle's team.
A few days before the election, I caught a wonderful bio of McCain and Obama on PBS. Tom Daschle was featured prominently in Obama's bio. Over the course of several video clips, he explained how he saw Obama at the 2004 Dem convention and decided he had great potential. The people of South Dakota had voted Daschle out of office in 2004, despite him being the Dem Leader. He contacted Obama and had serious conversations. He ended up offering his chief of staff, Pete Rouse, to Obama. Together, Rouse and Obama (and surely Daschle) mapped out a 4 year strategy to run for the Presidency. The key was to remain undefined on every issue, so there would be no votes that could harm his chances. In addition, Daschle would work behind the scenes, connecting up the Dem power base to Obama, allowing him to co-sponsor bills with powerful Dem legislators. Mostly it was important to allow Obama to remain undefined, hence all the abstentions on votes, hence the lack of any accomplishments, etc. After Rouse came David Ploufe to run Obama's campaign, along with most of Daschle former campaign staff.
I've wondered who the hell would even listen to Obama, since he had no power base of his own, no accomplishments, no experience running a government. It seemed to me that he could only be a figurehead. Since PBS (unlike every other news service) finally reported that Daschle WAS the man behind Obama, it's now clear who will be wielding the power -Tom Daschle. Or rather, I should say that Obama will be wielding the power, but all the power comes from Daschle. Daschle is the guy who knows who can be trusted and who can't, and where the bodies are buried. Daschle is the one who people owe favors to. Daschle is the man behind Obama.
To that degree, Obama's Presidency will be a reflection of Daschle's leadership.
