So I sold the Miata. When we bought it last year, it was for her one hour commute. We had no kids, renting an apartment in Tennessee, and far from everyone we knew.

Fast forward one year. My wife was hired by Intel and we traveled across the country again. We bought a house, friends we had from New York live here, and my mother is living with us. The Miata being our only car was no longer plausible. We were contemplating buying a cheap daily and keeping the Miata. We talked for a while, and decided it made more economic sense to buy a small car for our household stuff and save to buy an NB to build as a track car. I have never been able to track the NC, and never could have. I do not fit inside with a helmet on and the roof up, and caging it to clear my head and meet safely would prevent the roof from operating. The NC would never be a track car. That was not what we purchased it for either. Had we known, we would have planned differently, but hey, that's life. So here we are, we are $5k negative into the Miata, so selling it was not an option. We needed to trade it in. We had to find a good enough deal to carry the balance, and we found it.

Some of you have heard me spout my electric rhetoric. I refer to internal combustion as 'infernal' combustion. I've always believed in the superiority of the electron. Today, I put my money where my mouth is and purchased a 2015 Ford Focus Electric.

107 kilowatt engine, or for you non-scientists 148 hp and 184 lb/ft. It has a torque vectoring differential so the is ZERO torque steer. It actually loves to power through corners. I am loving driving it. It has a single speed transmission. Reverse is obtained by reversing the polarity! #StarTrek

Image

While other manufacturers *cough* Nissan *cough* built ground up cars with all the problems that come with a brand new platform, Ford did exactly what it has been doing for years. Ford put a new engine in an existing platform. Everything on this car is run of the mill Ford Focus off the shelf parts that are available, field tested, and cheap. They were able to focus on the development of the driveline instead of an entire car. This make the Ford the most powerful all electric. 27kw more powerful than the Leaf. It also goes further on a charge, which takes less time because the Ford has a smaller battery. The downside of this is battery placement is not convenient. While some are in the area where the gas tank would be, and additional amount had to be included in the hatch. This has a significant effect on cargo space.

Image

It's not all that bad as there is a storage compartment next to the battery.

Image

The handle has a 3rd mode that lifts the panel to be level with the top of the battery.

The interior is standard Ford Focus, and that is to say amazing. I love this interior.

Image

Image

The car has dual zone climate control, heated seats, power windows, 6 way driver seat, touch screen navigation, back up camera Wifi, Bluetooth, Sirius, Pandora, and a special version of Ford Sync with a companion app that lets me control the car and start the AC or heat from my Android.. #AllTheThings

Now, getting back to the $5k negative equity on the Miata. There are $3,500 in Ford rebates, and an additional $5,000 in electric car incentives that you paid for. Thanks! #GovernmentSubsidies All that left me with equity to spare in the Focus. Add to that I will NEVER pay for an oil change, or transmission fluid, or gas. As it stands, I don't even have to pay for my electric. I live in Portland. There are chargers everywhere. I get preferred parking in all parking ramps, free electricity, HOV lane, and free parking downtown. #Winning

Image

I can't say enough how much I love this car. I've got plans to upgrade the suspension and maybe one day delve into the motor. What surprises me is how much attention it gets people are constantly looking. A guy in a newer lowered Si was eye banging my Focus. I was just straight confused.

I need to get video of it when I can rig up a jig to hold my phone, but the car turns regenerative braking into a game, and gives you a score 0-100%, based on how much of your acceleration energy was recovered while braking. I'm getting good at getting 100%. That means I'm stopping purely on electromagnetic induction. I'm never going to need to put brake pads on this.

Thanks! I can't wait to track it. Going to try and auto-x. Pam is conspiring to somehow get this drivetrain into a Miata. She is determined. I think I might be able to get it into something like a Lotus or a Noble pretty easy as they use FWD based engines in their chassis. But dreams are cheaper than motors.

Congrats on your new ride. . So what does Ford estimate as it's driving range per charge? It'll be very interesting to see what you actually get in comparison to their claims.

Welcome to the dark side. It's nice not having to buy has oil etc. does your ford have regen braking. If so does it do it enough to almost avoid the brakes?

Yup, this is something that has been f*** up since our forum change back in April, along with the search not showing anything after April 24th or something.

Ford / EPA estimates 70 miles per charge. We've already driven 26 miles and have 66 remaining according to the on board computer. So far I'm ahead of the game. The range is nowhere near Tesla, but neither is the cost.

Yes it does. I've stopped several times already without using the mechanical brakes. The induction braking feels similar to engine braking. Very easy to get used to.

Is the rear storage chest removable? Seems like taking it out would open up the cargo area quite a bit.

Also, you've gone Full Portland. :P

Yes. I imagine the battery is not lower because of weight distribution. It is placed over the axle.

Image

The 110v charge cable is stored under the storage area, with a air pump.

Image

Under the battery box cover is a cover over a steel box.

Image

Pretty sure Tyco had a hand in my last electric car too...

Image

Under the hood is a large cover. Fun fact, it's made of some sort of flexible foam rubber like material.

Image

Removing the cover shows the on board charger. The external cables are essentially fancy extension cords.

Image

The engine and transmission are located directly under the charger.

The engine is liquid cooled. you can see some of the plumbing in the last shot. It is not standard coolant.

The standard 12v battery powers up the chassis and runs the electronics. The engine harness is powered up separately. The batteries are climate controlled by the car to increase battery performance and life. It's been well thought out. In researching these before I bought it I found almost no problems. There only seems to be one minor glitch in the system. If it is plugged in while fully charged it can cause the 12v battery to discharge. This is easy to solve as it is a standard 12v battery and is easy to remove and recharge. Speaking of, all my radio stations and settings are saved to an SD card so I lose nothing from disconnecting the battery. I also discovered my transmission does have 1.3 quarts of fluid.

From dead to full on a 240v charger is 3.5 hours. The home 120v charger is 13 hours.

Ok so out of curiosity I compiled some numbers today. I ranked all of Ford's Focus/Fiesta engine offerings by torque and why the hell not threw in Nissan's 4 cyl line up.

HR16DE - 107 (109)
1.0L Ti-VCT EcoBoost® - 123 (123)
MRA8DE - 128 (130)
2.0L Ti-VCT - 146 (160)
QR25DE - 180 (182)
Focus Electric - 184 (143)
2.0L EcoBoost (ST) - 270 (252)

The Electric comes out 2nd only to the ST 2.0. By HP I'm in the middle. I have to say. It's funny when I put the throttle down a bit on launch. When they catch up and speed past me they are pretty confused. I think it would be even better with stickier tires. It's so quiet I can hear the tires slip and the the traction control kick in.

I ended up a light next to this today. You can imagine what happened.

I love it! The Focus is definitely a good looking car. My friend has an ST and it's a nice place to sit and handles well.

If I'm honest I hadn't even noticed. I assumed they would have put them on all of them by now. Also, No. You can't have my taillights. Well maybe if you give me your bumper.

The ST looked fun. We thought about an ST Fiesta when we bought the Miata last year. The problem is Pam and I have loath torque steer. It's the same reason we hated the Speed3. Can't do it.

Me? Never. Ford says the battery is good for 10 years. They have been selling the car for 3 years and aside from the 12v charging issue there aren't any problems being reported. I leased the car for 3 years. By then, the oldest will be 6 years old and I will make me decision of " buy vs turn in" based on how they do between now and then.

I was reading about charging batteries and such after I read this. Man have I been f*** up my batteries by not paying attention to how they are depleted/charged.

Silver is by far my favorite color for cars.
