im tripping that it takes 6 days for a head gasket to arrive at Advance Auto! I feel like im wasting time, but i guess the wife and homework could be incorporated into this week.

btw, Duralast Lawn and Garden Battery > Optima

my Lawn and Garden battery held a 12v charge over the winter and started the car up right away while my buddy's yellow top Optima didn't last a month

Duralast gold>lawn mower battery>optima

i left my aux fan on over night the other day...from 7a.m. till 10a.m. the next morning...car started right up...well it bogged like ars, but its normal...

which begs the question

do any of you have a starting issue...my POS, i swear, i crank it, it start bogs to death, crank it again, starts, bogs bogs , semi steady idle, then dies, if i dont ease into the gas a bit, it would die again...

any ideas... should i video this...?

yea i have that problem sometimes. Sounds like a problem with the air regulator or something. Do you prime the fuel pump before each startup? I found that if i just hop in and start it without priming the pump it usually idles nice at 1500 then idles down..everytime during the "cold start" period though, it drives like utter s***.

Duuuude I too have a Duralast GOLD lawnmower battery!!

After I had TWO Optima red tops that were wired together (dual battery tray in jeep TJ) go completely dead in an hour trying to break in a new engine, and the $29.99 Econocraft battery I had manned up and turned the engine over ALL DAY, I realized that spending more than $29.99 on a battery is completely unnecessary.

To add a little more back story, I had accidentally used the wrong size bearings (well, they were labeled STD when they were in fact .020 over) and the engine was too tight to turn. Even towing it with another car, throwing it in 3rd, and popping the clutch wouldn't turn the engine over. The only thing that did actually turn the engine over EVERY TIME was the Econocraft (that had spent 4 years starting the boat, van, whatever we needed it to).

oh i FAILED this thread so its all good haha

yea my Lawn and Garden is a beast tho. Even after the battery tray sliced the first one open, spilling battery acid on my coldpipe and making a terrible mess, it still started lol But i got that one replaced under warranty by autozone hehe

now over 5 months of sitting and holding a 12v charge, and relocating to the hatch w/ 4 gauge wiring and a 250A inline fuse, it starts and charges like a beast. gotta love a $23.99 battery! Plus everytime i popped the hood last year, people were dumb-founded that i was using one, so it made it extra cool

2-The tighten, loosen, tighten isn't needed anymore. Just the first time they're installed.

3-Yes. Anytime you pull the head, you'll need to re-torque after cool down. Also your socket CAN NOT touch the sides of the head AT ALL if you expect to torque the studs to the proper amount. Any contact will decrease the amount of torque actually applied to the head and will cause leaks or warpage.

4- Get the head on, torque the studs (no contact with the socket and the head!) and put eveything together. Start the car and let it idle until it gets to NOT and then allow it to run for another 10 min. Turn off the car and let it cool COMPLETELY. Remove the valve covers, and re-torque the nuts on the head studs. You don't need to remove the cams, you can do it with them installed if you're careful.

5-IDK.
alright im going to be doing this tomorrow sometime with a friend and a case of Labatte Blue Light..maybe i should leave the beer out.. haha but yea, im getting this s*** done cuz im sick of seeing the car rot in the garage.

as for the socket, i ground the thing down more, but it still touches the head a bit, but BARELY..i mean it turns with ease, im just worried abt taking to much off as its already gettin pretty thin..

on a side, and happy note, the new Greddy Counterweight shift knob is amazing! i'd say the best $40 i've spent on the interior

here it is. Its up and runnning. I've already re-torqued the ARP's after a 30 min. warmup, but might do that one more time JUST to be sure.. I've been having dreams lately of my head gasket failing (Ryan was actually in one of them lol?) so im gonna play it safe.

Thanks for all the help everyone! There will be a drift video uploaded later when the car is legal along with a funny commercial my friend and I thought off lol

you'll like this Tim..

i started it again today and let it idle for 10-15 minutes to let it warm up and do its thing so later i could re-check the head bolt torque, and no longer than 10 mins. afterwards, a cop rolls up to my house because one my neighbors were complaining. haha

im actually going to drive the car for the first time since last October. Hopefully after 2 re-torque's and 45min. of idle time the head gasket is seated..

just back, head gasket is still intact lol. i have an exhaust leak which i think is because of only having 3 bolts holding the O2 housing on and i need to add a bit of coolant and get some gas and set the boost controller

FWIW, after removing the butterflies and driving it last night, I couldn't really tell the difference..I could still pull up to a stop sign and do a second gear "rolling take off". I'm soooo happy i got rid of those damn things haha

now i just have to install the VLSD and get some sweet JDM drift vids

well hmm here my experience..

i built my motor with arps, felpro gasket.. idled to wot no leaks took it down the road 60% throttle to 6k engine break to 2k... and repeat about 10 times..

changed oil and repeated and put 100 miles on it change oil... then drifted it one event... and driven it another 150 miles.. has like 300 miles on it ....i didnt have any problemw ith arps or gasket seating... i was told to recheck torque at 1k miles but im gona do it before next event.. i just followed arps instructions of torque and loosening and torque and loosening, but i think my final torque was a lil over 80... i dont member lol.. so far so good. i hope u dont have any more isssues..

oh and on the recheck of torque do they want u to loosen them(remove applied torque) and then retorque or just put it on there and make it click once? and my socket got stolen so i need to buy another one and grind it down lol

i did the torque-retorque thing before it started, then let it idle, then cool down. then checked it again. i idled it, drove it a bit, then checked torque again. that was two nights ago. I now have insurance and stuff on the car and am going to be driving around the next couple hours so i can find any other leaks in the oil cooler system, to get a good idea where to set my thermostat controller too, and to make sure the gasket seats! lol

I did a couple 5-7psi 5k runs down the road, but it was never above like 1/2 throttle..im going to let it warm up REALLY good before i get on it today. If it breaks, it breaks..im sick of worrying and im 99.999 (repeating 9) % sure everything is ok to go boosting around in. I figure i need to actually drive it to make sure everything is ok.

btw, thats ALOT of oil changes lol

hmm for some reason it decided to spring a coolant leak today at the manifold where the turbo line that comes around the back of the block goes to. Repaired it once and guess what..

It did it again! lol

the hose clamp is cutting the hose. I'm gonna try a different clamp but im running out of hose! probably get some fuel line or something to repair it with tomorrow if I can't fix it tonight. other than that, its fun to kick sideways (still open diff) and screams through the RPMs without the butterflies. can barely tell the difference i swear!

Glad to hear you got your bucket back up and running, but coolant leaks need immediate attention, so make sure you correct that before driving it again. I know you were paranoid about the headgasket and maybe you learned something, but you didn't really need to keep check the torque. If you did it right the first time, there's really no need to keep re-checking because you're going to be pissing off your valve cover gaskets with the repeated removal and installation of them.

On the other B-fly thing, unless they were hooked-up correctly and you drove around town with a little pissy T25 and kept the rpm under 4000, you would never know the difference. Again, good you're back now break-in your engine correctly and if built correctly, you should be ready withing the 1st 100 miles. Engine breaking is your friend "JUST DO IT"

I dont have anymore of those pictures, Dee found about your pix and was jellous.

this information is midly disturbing..

as for the car, went out and tried messing with the boost controller. It was spiking at 13psi but i got it narrowed between 9 and 8 psi. I'm trying to get to 10psi stable but have difficulties.

well here is an update on the car as of now.

I've been dealing with coolant leaks since i got it running. A small one from the back of the intake for the turbo was an easy fix, then i capped the port coming from behind the thermostat which would usually be for the throttle body coolant lines. That leaked for a bit but fixed with a hose, bolt, and a couple of clamps, and its holding strong! I can say that because yesterday after doing a bit of a drift after picking up my stuff from my ex-girlfriend (b****), one of the under the manifold hoses ripped in two causing me to loose all coolant! Luckily I have friends with trucks and trailors so i got it towed home last night and just fixed it an hour ago =]

There is a small oil leak from the head, but I retorqued the ARP's and it seems it has gone away. If I get this job I'm supposed to be getting, I may do the head gasket again just to be sure. I still need coilovers and RUCA's because my rear camber is outrageous and eats through tires like crazy lol. Video walk-through of my car coming soon, as soon as I get my last couple stickers and get the car washed. Coolant went everywhere yesterday and now its all sticky xP

also, I'm doing 10psi all day with 28psi idle fuel pressure. I might bump it up to 12psi and 36psi fuel pressure soon, but I'm already getting 18mpg in this thing, so I may wait. It sure is fun to drive tho, I Love it!

almost forgot, i have a nice vacuum leak too. I'm pulling 15-16" at idle which isn't terrible, but i was pulling 18 all day last year. I think its the IACV gasket, since a bit of it came off during the whole cleaning process and i dont believe I put any RTV on it..so that'll come off when I get some time and I'll see if that fixes my vacuum.

I'M PROMISING A VIDEO OF MY CAR RUNNING AND DRIVING WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS! Full walk around/through and everything.
