Doesn't Toyota and GM share styling and mechanical cues with each other? If so then that would be the answer to why Toyota has gone the ugly and unreliable route. Personally I think that all the automakers have decided that what we as Americans want is more interior room to support our fat and obese size, and in doing so they have to increase the size of everything on the outside of the cars as well. Look at the new Ford Taurus, it's freakin huge, the same goes for the new Chevy Malibu and Impala, what are supposed to be in the mid-size category are starting to get bigger than the fullsize category. Oh and while we're on the topic of ugly, why does every car have to come out with 20" rims? We're supposed to be working towards better fuel economy, how can you get better fuel economy when your making everything about your cars bigger and heavier. I see a repeat of the 70's oil crisis in terms of car design, the resurgence of the compact (and hopefully the sport compact) is on the horizon.
