The new 2016 Miata

Since so many NICOclub staffers and members own a Miata, here's a spot to discuss the car Nissan wishes it had built!

Also, the reveal with Duran Duran was nice. The camera work was lacking though.

So much for the idea of building a muscle car next. Looks like those funds are getting put toward a new Miata

The rest of the online event was hilariously chaotic and disorganized. Audio problems, poor camera work, and a lack of scripted content.

The presenter was heard saying "I drew that out as long as I could." as the screen faded to black. :rotfl

On the plus side, this makes it clear that Mazda spent all its money on design and engineering.

Seems like NICO has the best pictures I've seen of it thus far. I like it a lot. I can't wait to drive one!

I might have to move this to the Miata forum on here!!

I wish i could afford a new car. This would be top of my list for a sub 30k car.

That is a downright sexy car. If it ends up with the 200 horse engine, this may be the next car I buy. It'd be awesome to buy new, but unless something crazy happens with my budget and a wedding pays for itself, it'll have to be a couple of model years old before I can get my hands on one.

I love this photo. Wish more car companies would do overlays like this:

Personally I think it's the best looking Miata since the NA. I really don't hate any of them, but this one is a step in the right direction. The NC was a good looking car, but way too bulky and just wasn't what a Miata should be IMHO - which is light and nimble. Obviously until I drive one, I can't form a true opinion on it but I think this one is going to be quite special. I still prefer the NA though and always will. Pop-up headlights FTW.

Although I like the design, it doesn't look like a Lotus Elan anymore. I kind of liked the simplicity of the lines in the original. This still looks good, but more Italian than Brittish.

I dig it. I love how far aft the A-pillar is. It's very nicely proportioned overall, though it's hard to ignore (despite the designer's talk about how "impossibly low" the nose is, that the driver's shoulders are still about level with the top of the door. The nose has a sort of S2000-ish feel to it. What I like most, though, is the rear. Mazda managed to imbue what could have been a boring swath of bodywork with some style and depth. It's almost BMW-like. And the muscular beltline is nice, too.

I do find it amusing that so many people are talking about how nice the interior is. It's a Miata! I don't care about the interior, and I definitely don't care about any smegging smartphone interface.
Then again, if Mazda manages to genuinely trim 200+lb off the last generation while improving the interior, I'm not inclined to complain.

But now it looks just like every other god damned roadster. It's lost it's niche.

I really like how the A-pillar DOESN'T mold itself into the front fender. I absolutely hate that about new cars.

I have never been a big Miata guy really (never driven one... have always been curious)... but I would drive the piss out of one of these. This is one of the best looking cars Mazda has ever built. Right up there with the FD RX-7.

if they bring that in under 30K I may have to sell the 7 and have a mid life crisis. It's like Mazda is trolling here and read my posts.

So that's Toyota and Subaru, now Mazda. Nissan? Anything?

Interesting read, but 90% of the article is talking about the previous generation Miata which WAS a lot bulkier and butched up compared to the original. The new one has been trimmed down a ton and has dropped a lot of the macho buldges from the NC Miata.

Again though - I still prefer the original to the rest. Always have and always will. Honestly though I share those feelings with a lot of Japanese vehicles - like the Fairlady Z, RX7, GT-R, and Celica. Something about the original models was always so pure and just not trying so hard.
