so my coupe now has 18,000 miles on it and has decided that it shall end its life of flawlessness by developing a ticking sound that seems to be coming from the front drivers side wheel, it doesn't sound like a brake issue more of a bearing related problem. Has anyone else had any of this "ticking" happen to them, its quite a nuisance when you are cruising along with the windows down, sunroof open, trying to act all rockstar, and in the background of the moment there is a constant ticking. So before i take it to the dealership and watch the 16 year old mechanics turn my car into a whore by tearing the side of the car apart, i'd like to know if anyone has a heads up on the situation, thanks

Check the cotter pin on the hub. I had the same problem when I had removed my wheels for the spring installation.

I don't think it's a nail or screw because it makes the same loudness of "tick" at any speed. Even if you are idling at 1 mph when the wheel makes one full rotation it still makes the same decibel of tick that it would if you were travelling at 20 mph. I think Shift_Coupe may have this one right. I am going to tear into it tomorrow to attempt to figure it out.

not the loudness of the tick, but the frequecny of how often the tick happens. the faster you go, the more ticks you hear.

vi3t89- that is exactly what it sounds like, my car hasn't been lowered either. The ticking is simply maddening. So if I can not figure it out tomorrow I will take it to to dealer and have the 16 year old mechanics turn the car into a red light district resident, but as long as the ticking will be gone I am willing to accept this fate for my beloved Nissan.

Unless I have misunderstood what you are trying to imply, what I was saying is that the ticking in my car has the same volume of tick at 1 mph as it does at 20mph. So let's say it is emitting a 70 decibel tick per full tire rotation at 1 mph it is emitting the same 70 decibel tick at 20 mph (granted the tick is much more frequent due to the wheels rotational speed).

Sounds like a wheel bearing?

yeah i guess i didnt really think about how that would sound when i originally typed it out, I didn't mean to insinuate that the bearing itself was bad, but more of that the noise seemed to be coming from the hub assembly which houses the wheel bearings, and not the brakes.

Raise your car on that side, take the wheel and and shake it, if the wheel moves a large amount, or you can spin it and hear a click emitting from the wheel, then its most likely a bearing problem. Quite possibly might need to take the tire off and shake the brakes to see if its a loose caliper. See if you can duplicate the sound this way. I would get it to Nissan fast though. This could be a saftey issue.

I'll bet my next paycheck that it's the cotter pin as previously mentioned.

Also, Scandinavian...could you resize your sig pic? It's a bit on the large size. Should be a max of 600x200. Thanks man!

So I pulled off the front wheel today and just like shift_coupe said, the center cotter pin was rather loose. It looks as though it could have easily been ticking off of the center cap on the rim, so i took some pliers pinched the cotter pin onto the hub assembly as to not allow any movement, then reinstalled the wheel and by god the ticking is gone. SO huge thanks to Shift_coupe for the head ups, you saved my sanity.

Glad to hear that was the solution! I know the feeling of something driving you up a wall so bad.

Now go have fun with the coupe!
