If not most people want something they can put things and people in, and a miata is still not it. The people I know that buy them, buy them because they are a convertable and they think they are "flashy". Some people may like them, I don't. Maybe if they put a rotory engine in them or somthing.
Yeah, say that to the thousands of car enthusiasts who road-race Miatas, and auto-cross them. Have you ever driven one? They are a very capable chassis. I detest convertibles greatly, but you have to think of the Miata as a 'roadster' in the same tradition as the early Triumphs', MG's, Sprites, Sunbeam Tigers, etc etc. There is a huge aftermarket for the Miata, supercharger kits, turbo-kits are all regular occurences. You can make them fast very easily, and they are just as much of a 'bang for your buck' as a Honda Civic is.
In fact, i used to know a guy who was in the autocross club around here that had a very nice supercharged first-gen Miata. It's dark green, has projector headlights, 5 spoke rims, roll bars, and it placed very competitive times to the Vettes and Porsches that came to the events.
Yes, Miata's have a stigma to them for being the ambiguous man's car, (as the driver of this flamboyant Miata shows) or for the people having mid-life crisis. But who's to judge? There's plenty of people out there that bought them for their potential, and they're out there having fun at the track.
