I got a letter in the mail today from the EPA lab here in Ann Arbor saying that they would like to use my G in a test. The test would run 1 to 4 weeks depending on the number of cars submitted and would be tested all indoors for about 300 miles. All tests are done on a dyno with the possibility of a 10 minute road test. So what do I get out of the deal? A loaner with a full tank of gas and $20/day that my G is gone. I can also get the dyno results when the test is done. I still have yet to decide if I want to give up my G, but I guess that would depend on what kind of loaner I can get.

1-4 weeks that is a big time gap. I know I would not give up my G for that much.

it sounds iffy, but what type of loaner are we talking about? If its a fun loaner, than totally. If not, keep your car safe at home

What is $20 a day? That is an insult my friend, keep car safe at home, you'll have no regrets down the road.

Memories of a loaner, and an abused car you once loved? worse case senerio, but it's not worth the risk!!!

good luck!

Tell them you will only accept a GT-R as a loaner

Thats right! I have a had time staying away from my G for 1 week, let alone 4 weeks. In 4 weeks, I would be in an emergency room as a result of over anxiety and depression related issues. The G, as unrefined as it is, is ablast to drive.

Took my GF to my secret track yesterday. She nearly pissed in her pants--she screamed for dear life. She could not beleive what an animal I had become around the beautiful curves of the secret track. The G got her hear heart pumping.

The EPA should be loaded. I'd give them the car for $50/day for the first week and $700 for everyweek there after.

Think about this... How much is your car payment? Add your insurance to that, then factor in whatever inconvenience not having your G will cause (numbers will vary). Now divide that by 30. I'm sure the number will be much higher than $20.

Well, its either $20/day with a loaner or $50/day without a loaner. The test consists of simulated driving just like they do for their MPG estimates. And they'll do any necessary maintenance.

I don't have a car payment so its definitely worth the $20/day in terms of daily payments. I definitely don't use $20/day in gas, nowhere near that amount. Its just a question of do I want to give up my G for some time to drive I don't even know what and make a few bucks.

your only going to get about $140 to $560 doesn't sound like its worth someone potentially abusing ur car.

There is no telling what is going to happen to your car there. I bet it would come back with at least one more scratch than it has now.

Well, it's $100-$560, plus a free tank of gas, and no more than 300 miles put on your G. Plus free dyno results, and a loaner to beat the **** out of.

As long as there is an iron clad warranty stating if they break it they buy it, I'd be on that like white on rice.

I LOOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEE to beat the crap outta other people's cars.

Its the government and its scientists, not teenagers working the valet. They are only allowed to use to do simulated tests on the dyno and take it for a real world 10 minute drive if need be. To be honest, I kind of forgot about it, I'll have to check on the deadline. Still thinkin about doing it. Free tank of gas, I may get a car with better mileage that I can beat up, and get paid cash from the good ole government. Hmm...

Here's some of the info they sent me.

Motor Vehicle Emission Testing Program (list of Q&As)4. Will my vehicle be mistreated in any way?No, every aspect of the test program has been designed to duplicate everyday operation

5. Exactly what will be done to my vehicle? An underhood inspection and routine maintenance, if necessary, will be performed prior to each test. The vehicle must be completely cooled off before the test can begin. ... Once the vehicle is sufficiently cooled off, it will be pushed onto a dynamometer. ... This analysis allows us to calculate the quantity of exhaust emissions emitted by your vehicle. Values for the city and highway fuel economy are also calculated. Typically 2 to 3 of these test sequences will be performed...

7. How will my vehicle be protected while in EPA's laboratory? In addition to providing insurance, your vehicle will be stored indoors while the testing is being conducted. If required to be parked outside, your vehicle will be located in a locked and secured area at the EPA NVFEL.

Dear Vehicle Owner:

...Your vehicle will probably accumulate less than 300 miles under simulated driving conditions. No unusual operations will be performed on your vehicle and it will be fully insured for the entire test period...

I think the key here is that you should get things in writing so if anything "sketchy" occurs you will have written proof to back your defense persay you take the issue to the courts.

I'd also try to get a hold of a representative by phone or in person and be asking A LOT of questions.

If I were in your position, I'd go to the extent of even asking for the driving records of all the drivers that will be piloting my vehicle.

Overkill? I think not...

Well, I do have it in writing that it will be fully insured while in their possession.

But I mean think about it. Its the EPA, the federal government. You have to have background checks to do that. They already have done extensive driving record checking. Anything that involves test driving or driving for the government, you have to have a completely clean record. If they do try and drop the balls on my G, it throws off all of their testing on my car and provides an unrealistic sample of the population. So in the name of statistics and science, they can't drive my G harder than I already do.

You guys are paranoid. Unless the contract has some loophole, I'd be fine with them taking my G (minus the fact that it doesn't pay much).

Do you really think they are going to abuse your car like you will theirs? Or better yet, than you do to it yourself?

I don't see anything wrong with it. However, just because accidents happen, I'd take detailed close-ups of every angle of the car before I hand over the keys. Other than that, go for it.

What I'm looking forward to getting out of it is scientific data on real world, normal HP/TQ figures and mileage data. Everyone puts their car on a dyno to see what the max is. I've always wondered what kind of power is going down under normal conditions. And now I'll be able to scientifically verify my mileage calculations. And I get all of that for free.

I could use the money towards the G afterwards, but I could use it period. In a training period for a job based on commissions, so I don't have too much cash flow right now.

To be honest, I kinda hope to get a hybrid. I just want to check one out to see what all the hype is about and my engineering curiosity is there, too, even though I'm not an engineer. Plus, if I get one, I make more money out of deal because I should be spending less in gas. I just thought about this too, I wouldn't have buy premium!

Take your G and flee, burn the info card and get out of state ASAP.

They're after you!!!!

I would never give anyone my G, I rarely ever let my girlfriend of 3+ years drive, unless I'm half in the bag.
