It happened in my original09 M35 and it has now happened in my 2nd 09 M35. If you have reclining / temp seats with controls in the armrest, the wiring harness for all those rear controls kinks up or loosens up. It was an easy fix in my original M35 - just a matter of seat removal and loosening the main rear harness so it was not affected by the armrest position. I tried that fix in my current M35 but no-go. Apparently, the harness is ka-put. Luckily, the only effect is that O have no volume control. The screen functions normally, but no sound.
I'm a bit busy these days so I don't have the time to dismantle the rear seats, etc. When I get a block of time to dive into this, I'll snap some photos and create a DIY. I doubt there are many members out there with this feature - rear movie screen, DVD surround sound, reclining/heated seats and a plethora of armrest controls for the rear passenger. I looked up my VIN and here is what this 'curse' cost back in 2009. I think it was only available for 1 or 2 years.

I think I know why this package was only available for a few model years. Of course, those dollar amounts are only as accurate as the website that offers 'official window stickers' based in VIN.

i have the same package as you, i think it was called "entertainment package". one of my rear seat is no longer heated or reclined. all sound functions and buttons still work; I think. i haven't sat back there since forever. :)
