Well some of you guys know that my cruise control has been down for a while, and the shift lock on the car has not worked for probably the last 4 years or so..
Some may remember that Fred had a problem with the brakes, and a short in the factory harness.. so they rigged a simple wire from the brake switch to the brake lights, bypassing the factory harness....
So yesterday, I had nothing to do, my golf clubs are getting regripped, had the day off work, so I set out to fix my cruise control.. I took off the lower dash panel on the drivers side, which is a lot more work that i was expecting, theres a lot of stuff that bolts to it, still I had the entire drivers side of the console disassembled in about an hour.. I probably removed the most screws per square inch in this area than i have in any other area of hte car...
The reason I did this is you have to get at the Cruise control computer in order to test various circuits... I did it, and my tests revealed the stop lamp switch was at fault... I go in there and start looking at the stop lamp circuit, and theres an exposed wire dangling nearby... I found it sort of by accident, i was probing around in that area, and a piece of electric tape stuck to my hand, exposing the wire...
So i simply twisted the wire back together with the factory harness, put some electric tape on it.. tested it out, and the cruise control... BUT WAIT, i go to press the brake, and what do i hear, but a click from the shifter... Does this mean, YES IT DOES, my shift lock is working again! I was pretty stoked!
So the cliff notes are, if youre having problems with your cruise control, it could be related to the brake switch, but you can know definitely by removing the lower drivers side dash panel, and removing the ASCD control unit and probing the circuits listed in the FSM..
