I was doing some research on the internet about brake fluids and there doesn't seem to be any clear consensus about which is better to use, Dot 3 or Dot 4, and whether or not it is OK to mix them. The owners manuals for my 94 J30T, my 88 GMC van, and my 92 Ford explorer all say to use Dot 3 brake fluid, and many say use only the fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Dot 4 has a higher boiling point, but contains borate ehhers that some say will damage the seals on a car designed for dot 3. Some say it is OK to mix dot 3 and dot 4, but if you mix them the resulting boiling point will be lower than either dot 3 or dot 4. Some cans of dot 4 brake fluid say on them they are compatible with dot 3.
One thing everyone says is never mix silicone dot 5 fluid with dot 3 or 4, it will result in a jello like gel which can never be cleaned out.
Here are a couple of links to the better articles I found on the subject.
