I recently replaced the alternator on my 1990 Nissan 240sx. Now the POS will barely run. IT DID NOT DO THIS BEFORE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ALTERNATOR!!

Here are the symptoms:

Will barely idle, misses Spits, misses, runs like crap, will not get above 2500 rpm Stalls and dies when you let off the gas. Black smoke from tailpipe, plugs are black No CEL

Found a crack in the flexible intake ductwork and closed it.

Alternator puts out 14.1 volts while car can be forced to run.

I feel that I might have knocked something loose or disconnected, but after several thorough inspections cannot seem to find anything wrong.

PLEASE HELP ME!! This is my primary mode of transport and I am (and so are my friends) sick of bumming rides!

check the MAFs

if this is bad or loose connection it will not rev past 2500

and couse the rest of your problems too

since the ecu sees no signal it has a default setting for fuel, hense running ****ty and only and fouled plugs runs rich

SO far this is the most likely aveneue of my problem as I did have to remove the intake ductwork to be able to get my thick arms down in there. ok... I can go with that... but WHY would the car run decently BEFORE the alternator and crappo AFTER the alternator being installed? I touched nothing (that I know of) during the install?

Thank you all, I will check out the MAF. BTW if it is a bad MAF what is a fair and reasonable price for a yardbone MAF? BTW this is my first Nissan and foreign car for that matter. I come from a long old MoPar background. I really like this car though. It is quick and flicks through turns and corners like a lowered skateboard compared to what I was used to driving. I dont knock any car other than Yugos and as I always say:

"Its not what you buy, its what you build that counts."

Any other ideas on this problem are appreciated and I will investigate all of them. This is one of the nicer boards that I have been on in a long while.:beer :rockon

your intake tube split may be your problem. but also check to see if you knocked the pcv valve hose off.

Gotcha.. funny thing is that when it was cold outside the engine would kill at 3500 RPM when driving, I had to drop back from 5th to 4th gets the revs below 3500 and she would run fine. Hmmm I wonder if there is a related causality here?
