It was dark, just past dusk, I hit a racoon on the highway, I swear it came out of nowhere and just wanted to piss me off damnit... the furry bugger cracked the front bumper in three places, and also had the left wheel / lower engine cover torn up in the mess...

What should I do?

(besides getting a new front end kit)

I managed to salvage the parts, which were mangled behind the front drivers side wheel and burned and slightly damaged due to high speed abrasion now you can look right at the wheel through the engine bay ... not so good, it's right below my intake, and I don't want to suck too much H20 if it rains... what should I do?

Oh, and, I did really try to avoid this, but there were cars around me you know... ... Oh, if anyone's still reading, I would've already ordered a full body kit, but I just ordered my rear 2005 lower bumper thingys pre painted through infiniti, and an 05 bumper, which will soon be painted etc... so I just really need a couple side skirts and a bumper kit, or full kit at the right price

Anyway, life sucks, just when you think you're getting ahead, but maybe this will work out for a reason

Good luck and im sure it will work out for a reason and i hope i get the diesel out of the altima with out any damage to the motor or fuel system

That blows!! You already answered your own question... buy a new front end kit!!!!

As far as intake... not sure what your weather is like there, but if rain is that much of a concern...throw your older stoock intake on until it's fixed.

Must have been a big raccoon!!

lol 1+ for the body kit, , I saw some nice ones that I'll be looking into this week, thanks for the advice, I may go back to the stock intake if I can't get the piece back on to cover the engine...

The ol' racoon was pretty big, I drove back to make sure he was dead last night, he was a pretty big bastard.

Diesel Altima? When did those come out!!! lol

just kidding, that sucks man, hopefully you'll get that mess sorted out, I will say, altimas are tanks, they run so well it's crazy... I had one for 3 years, and no complaints, except the clutch eventually gave me grief.

Call your insurance company. Let them know that you had a minor accident with hitting an animal, but only file a claim if the repair cost will be well over your deductible.

Seen too many people get burnt over not reporting minor accidents to their insurance company. Gotta keep them in the loop, even if they don't assist you.

Perhaps it was a small moose?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Hope things work out well.

I feel lucky now. I hit a tire tread on the highway this past weekend at about 80mph. It pulled the front of the engine shroud down and pushed it backwards so it drug until I could pull over and pull it back. I was able to make it home with the help of a few well placed zip ties and then able to fix it the next day. I feel lucky in comparison.

good that you are ok. with the car so low, i have to be very careful on the highways. there are alot of semis that cross through indiana, and so shredded truck tires are a common thing. when i first got the car, i ran over one at speed (80?) and wow, it was bad. luckily, nothing broke, but i was so freaking scared! could always be worse though. a deer or moose would have killed you.

I hit a dead German Shepherd once about a year ago. It left pieces of meat under my car that I was never able to completely remove. It smelled like cooked, dead dog every time I drove it for a while. Fortunately, It didn't hit any of the front bumper work. Sorry to hear about yours, but what an opportunity to make an already fine automobile even finer!

Sorry to hear about your mishap. This is a comprehensive loss under your auto insurance. Some states have full coverage (no deductible) on comp losses, check your declarations page. Insurance companies normally do not consider an animal as a chargeable claim, however, if you've had several claims, they will bang you for "frequency." If you want to fix it yourself without the insurance, you might want to try looking for the parts used on http://www.car-part.com. Good luck.BTW, I hit a 16 ft aluminum boat with my 540i after it blew off the top of a van. It went bow first, upside down under the car and had no steering till I stopped. Scared the hell outta me.

Bentrod is correct. Unless it's a domesticated animal like a cow. Wild animals are considered unpredictable and difficult to avoid. A dumb cow (by this I don't mean the phat chick in the grocery isle buying 5 pounds of cheddar cheese) is considered more easily avoided even if it's in the middle of the road.

My friend Tony said that he swerved to miss some animal and crashed his truck. The insurance company fixed the truck, but her later received a letter in the mail along these lines:

Although we don't support animal cruelty, please hit the animal next time...

Full grown they are the size of a very large cat... maybe even English Bull Dog sized... and they can be MEAN.
