This movie was incredible. Once again I find myself thinking "This is how 'superheroes' should be." I've always disliked superheroes and superhero stories. Batman is the exception, and this movie shows why.
The movie's pace and content were perfect. I kept thinking "man, there's no way they can wrap this all up in this movie..." but they did, and it NEVER felt tiring. It ended at the right time, on the right note...wrapped up perfectly. I also like a lot of the "getting out of the way" of some of Wayne's "constraints" (like Rachel). Now he's really free to be the horrible monster Batman has to be to serve his purpose. I LOVE the idea of the benevolent monster.
I like that they actually ENDED the major plotlines. No "two face survives to be the next villain" cliché, no "let's introduce a bunch of crap to get you interested and then end." The series could well end with this film and be fine. Certainly I'd like to see more Bale/Nolan Batman films, but it's SO REFRESHING to have a movie actually END instead of having a "sequel prep" ending.
Maggie Gyllenhaal ROCKS. Not only is she smokin' (oh, man, her halloween costume in Donnie Darko... ) but she's a HELL of a lot better actress than L. Katie Hubbard. I mean Katie Holmes. Her role was excellent and I'm glad to see they were willing to actually kill her off instead of "faking it" and then doing the "oh, she's really still alive" thing.
Ledger was fantastic as the Joker. Absolutely fantastic. I hate to say it, but he played the kind of villain I'd be if I was evil. He's nuts, enjoys being nuts, and enjoys enjoying being nuts. He's awesome. The perfect bad guy. He's just evil. That's all there is. He doesn't want anything, he's just a terrible horrible guy. You NEVER feel sorry for him, never sympathize with him, never want ANYTHING but to see him suffer like he made others suffer. THOSE are the villains that provide the best conflict, the most interesting scenarios.
I do have some nit-picks, so:There were a few CGI sequences that just looked fake. Like the helicopter crash during the big car chase scene. The way it bounced and rolled looked terrible and the lighting on it was all wrong. It looked obviously CGI and in this movie there's no excuse for that.
Two-Face's face was overdone. Both in the damage and the animation. Seen from one side, his jaw movements were more exaggerated and at different angles than the other. His teeth didn't match up, either.

I thought it was pretty clear from the beginning that the Nolan movies are a new take on things, with NO RELATION to the old Burton movies or the abominations that followed. That's why the last one was "Batman BEGINS." New take on things. Yes, it's a remake. Pretend the old ones never happened.
Also, Spielberg never did any Batman movies.

Yeah, but he's not doing that to be intimidating. He's doing it to disguise his voice.
