the color of used oil?

I changed the my oil today. I went to Strauss to recycle the used oil. The counterguy told me after he poured it in, the oil is black which means either your using cheap oil or your waiting too long between oil changes. He said the color should be the same as when you pour it in. You probably have blowby or bad piston rings. I changed oil on many cars and know for a fact after a few hundred miles it starts turning black. Have you ever heard anything more preposterous?

That guy is dumb.

The purpose of an oil is to protect, cool, and CLEAN the engine. Of course oil that has been circulating through the engine for thousands of miles is going to be darker than when it went in. Unless perhaps you have a brand-spankin' new car and it's getting it's first oil change...

But being realistic, the only time you ought to worry about your oil being dark is if you change your oil and the new stuff is immediately turned dark because your engine has so much crap in it.

Oh god, no, I couldn't stand it. I needed a muscle relaxer from laughing so much last time. Oil turns black. It depends on the condition of the engine and which oil you use but it will turn darker. Me thinks the guy is looking for more frequent business.
