MY STORY.I had a plate cover(weather guard) cover on my 00 Max, and got a VIOLATION on my record b/c it's illegal here in CA. O, and it's costing me 168$. The officer told me it would be a "fix it" ticket, not a Violation...so i didn't argue with him. Then i get the Court notice in the mail and it's a "5201 F" Violation. If you have a plate cover...TAKE IT OFF...it's sooo not worth it. He made me pop my hood, and told me that my intake was illegal b/c it's not in a "box"...THANKS Stillen He told me that i MUST have a ESN#/CARB# for my intake. Then he went around to the back of the car, and noticed my exhaust...AWESOOOOOME He asked if i have a CARB# for that too...i just told him that it came on the car from he Dealer, They installed it, and that it was a Manufacturer's upgrade.

So he ended up letting me off with just the ticket for the plate cover. but I live in far East County of San Diego, and see him all the time. I don't want to be pulled over again for "not correcting the violation". SO, i'm on the prowl, and have come to loooove Cattman @ http://www.cattman.com. Everything that they offer for my car has a CARB#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now he can pull me over for fun, and do it all over again...but this time i'll be ready!!!

Complete California Vehicle Code: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vctoc.htm

Violation points are assigned to Vehicle Code sections and any other code section, or city or county ordinance, involving the safe operation of a motor vehicle. Any violation occurring as a pedestrian or a bicyclist has no point assigned. The department may suspend and place on probation, or revoke, the driving privilege of a negligent operator.

Per Vehicle Code section 12810.5a, a Class C negligent operator has:

* 4 or more points in 12 months, * 6 in 24 months, or * 8 in 36 months.

Although a Class A or B driver without a special certificate may be allowed 2 additional points, a violation received in a commercial vehicle carries 1 1/2 times the point count normally assessed (12810.5b VC). A minor, under 18 years of age, may receive a 30-day restriction for 2 points in 12 months, or be suspended for 3 points in 12 months (12814.6 VC).

I got pulled over for having a clear cover on my license plate by the Highway Patrol. It was clear......clear. The only reason I have it is because I've had my sticker stolen before. So I had it really nice with these locking screws so you couldn't take it off. Guy gives me just a fix it ticket (because I am sleeper status). So, I take it to my friends dad who is a cop. Takes a look at the ticket and laughs.

Here's a question though, what prompted this guy to check your engine bay. Furthermore, why did you let him? He can't search your car without probable cause and a license plate cover is not that. You could have refused and he would have had to accept that because he has no cause nor reason to search your car. Sounds like this guy was simply being a d!ck to you and most people don't realize they can actually tell an officer "no."

i actually just took care of my ticket for the same thing today. mine was only a fix it ticket though, no violation and my cover was tinted so you couldnt see my numbers during the day. sounds like you were pulled over by a d!ck head cop.

Woah, I am glad I don't live in SoCal any more. The police here don't hassle anyone without reason, at least I haven't seen it.

Officers like this guy should be drummed off of the force. Most police officers are just average people doing a job that is supposed to help people. d!ck like this guy give all officers a bad name. Yes, it is the law but you can still be a fellow human being instead of a jerk.

agreed...he was an A$$ to me.

I didn't know i could say no to opening the hood. What would he need for probable cause..."a loud sounding car/engine"?

My cover was slightly tinted too, but very readable in the daytime.

he did seem like he was a Head cop(pun)...b/c he had that, "I'm always right, and you're just a dumb young adult driving a nice customized car."

San Diego is cool when it comes to being good about trying to recycle and keep things clean, but the cops here SUUUUUCK AAA$$$$$$$

I used to get pulled over in my Lifted Truck all the time, they would make me get out of the cab and put my hands on the bedsides while they would look inside and around my truck(as if i was smuggling drugs), but try not to touch anything.

I'm always getting tailed or harassed here in SAN DIEGO by the cops. They will even tailgate me like CRAZY at night just to get me to go faster or change lanes. I've even had 5 cops follow me all the way to my home before.

what's odd is, my father is a Detective up in Riverside...and most my uncles are cops. I just don't know why the cops here in SD hate me.

is it at all possible to take this to court and win?????????

I think so. I mean, he gave you a violation for a fixable offense. It should have been a fix-it ticket. Anything that is illegal on a car is given a fix-it ticket. If the owner refuses to fix it I think then it becomes a violation. But honestly, if your uncle's are cops I would ask them for the best answer. To tell you the truth, I think that cop d!ck with you and it should be a fixable offense but he didn't write it down on the ticket. When the official letter comes from your county, I would check and see if its a fixable offense. If not, I would take it to court. And no, a loud exhaust is not a reason to search your car. Probable cause to search your engine bay would be, "I can barely hear you over the idling of your car." And even then, the most a cop could really do, without being a d!ck of course, would be to write you a fix it ticket for the exhaust and you would need to take it to a referee station to get it checked. The law might have changed but pretty much it stands like this, a police officer needs a warrant or probable cause to search your personal property. So, probable cause could be, "I smell weed. Step out of the car sir." That has happened to my friend. In that case you have to let them search because tiny tim smelled "weed" and that is probable cause. However, I doubt an idling vq35 would create such an exhaust note that would give an officer probable cause to search an engine compartment nor would any respectable officer do so. I think that was just scare tactics. They do it all the time.

Yeah $10 fee. But that cop never wrote that on the ticket right? Now you could in return be a d!ck to that cop. And complain about the scare tactics he threatened you with and the things he made you do. Additionally, he didn't fill out the ticket properly and stated it would be a violation for you. That's scare tactics and he could get in trouble for that. So if what you say is completely true, you could get him in trouble and if you subpoena the camera feed from his cruiser and he did all you say he did, you could make a case out of it and probably stretch a case for pain and suffering with a good lawyer and get him suspended.

But, ^ = (time + money) x (hassle)

Most people just forget about it and you'll probably just get more satisfaction from shooting a kid in the face in paint ball.

BTW, take an intro to law class at your local community college and/or study vehicular law and what officers of the law can and cannot do. It will be very beneficial to you in the end especially if you skirt the fringes of legality as most of us do

Cops can make your life hell...so don't be a prick. Just know your rights and exercise them in a mature way. If your acting calm and level headed and he slaps you with something stupid then you can make a court case out of it. But I don't think a cop would lose his job over you...sorry to break it to you

Last time I checked, our joke of a govenor was a political figure, so is debating on who's state is better and the laws.

No biggy, I just saw a long drawn out debate regarding policy, celebrity politicians...etc. The G35 forum has some very passionate characters. I forgot that the max/I30 forum is AKA "How do I fix this...? Forum"

Nice! Truce for now. Swing by the G35 forum when you get a chance. Most of us push our cars pretty hard. I'm not one of them ATM. I'm still adjusting to the:

1)RWD2)Steering response3)Weight distribution4)VDC 5)6MT- Adding 2 gears and a clutch makes things totallly different.

I do miss my I30 though. Until recently, I wanted to do a RWD conversion on a 4th gen, but i think I have a better car in mind that mixes the long sleek body with power and RWD... 1st gen M45!!! I've seen a few driving around recently. I LOVE the styling of those cars.

Maybe when my wife and I decide to have kids, I'll buy one

There is something seductive about long wheelbase sedans with ridiculous amounts of power. For a while, I had an '82 Jag with a 5-spd I swapped in It was ridiculously quick. But I couldn't afford all that gas it used at the time and had to sell it

But I have to say, I love 1st gen m45 styling. Rear looks kinda funky, but you learn to love it. I also like the old q45's. They look good to.

i've been looking into building a Max with RWD. dropping the 5.6L from the titan/pathfinder. it would require sooo much time and extra cash...dreamers dream, but without dreamers we wouldn't have cars at all, right!!

some quick thoughts on RWD Maxima w/ a Titan V8:1. put the car on a frame machine and cut out the floor and firewall.2. cut out the rear suspension area, and fab in the rear end of the Pathfinder.3. drop in the engine and transmission.4. align the driveshaft down the center of the car5. design the header and exhaust system under the seats on either side.6. install a fuel cell in the trunk w/a fireproof cover.7. weld up a chrome-moly tube internal 8 point cage along with floor design.8. custom design suspension w/ Heavy duty coilovers from King Shocks.9. redesign firewall, but make the original dash fit back in.10. Install stock 350z Nismo steering wheel and 350z Nismo seats.11. Custom Alpine stereo with 7" touchscreen controls.12. Double layer sound proofing on firewall, floor, doors, trunk, and ceiling.13. Custom flare front and rear fenders(no fiberglass...cut and weld metal)14. Install all Nissan authentic Nismo badges and trim.15. install Proper ECU, and all electrical.16. Custom Carbon Fiber stacked hood.17. Carbon Fiber trunk and drifting wing.18. Monster front bumper and custom rear bumper w/ '08 Nismo 350z skirt.19. Invader side skirts. 20. Nismo Rims in front and rear w/ a custom Hub for fitment.21. Brembo brakes for the front and rear(on custom Hub)22...don't forget to run a Custom Setup w/ quad Nismo mufflers off the Nismo Altima.

... i'm sure that there is a lot that i have not thought of...lol

Which gen Max?

I would probably use the 4.5 L V8 instead of the 5.6. Gas is pushing $4 right now. No need to use more Or possibly the VQ35HR engine.

As far as sound proofing. Coming from the Max/I30 forum, I wanna hear when things are going wrong, so I'd probably kill some of that.

On my version, I'd have CF hood, trunk, doors & fenders all painted.

True Dual exhaust is mandatory.

Twin intake or individual throttle bodies.

When all was said and done, I'd expect a 3000-3200 lbs RWD 4th gen.

OH and I'd raise the damned seats. After driving my G, I can't believe how damned low the 4th gen seats were.

my day dreaming about cars kinda goes like this.

it's kind of like watching a movie in my head with some in my hands. When i have a good idea it looks like this . Then i my brain trying to figure out how my idea would work...when i figure it out i show it like this; , but some people just don't understand so i get a and sit in front of the computer and use to my advantage and come up with a plan to build the idea!!

i have one idea that i'm working on the design with an engineer...and no, i'm not going to tell you what it is :moon :moon b/c i'm getting a patent for the design, i've already sent in my letter of inception.

This thread has really degenerated nicely. Its quite enjoyable to watch how its unfolding. I have a feeling we may shortly be talking about the sleeping habits of dogs or perhaps the possibility of running our engines off of yard clippings.
