The big nipple on the idle control, catch can, blah blah help

On the intake manifold, on the idle control thingy, what does that giant 10mm fitting on there hookup to?

And do I have to use a catch can? I'm just trying to get this son of a ***** started I could care less about driveability for the next little while. I know there is that fitting on the exhaust side of the engine where that rubber hose runs around the side of your valve cover (what pumps through that anyways?), does that fitting go into your catch can? or what.
