Well just to throw my two cents in, because i can ^^.
I for one am a FIRM believer in the theory of "calling it what you want."
No one is forcing anyone to call any one thing, anything.
Because in the end does it REALLY matter to YOU what someone else prefers to call something?
Does it REALLY matter what side the steering wheel is on?As long as the person is comfortable with driving it?
I mean seriously... Now a days we have people born one gender and with enough money they have all of that changed. The ones with the most money some would not even be able to tell... but to see people get so worked up over what someone ELSE wants to call their car by specific type, group, even generation is kinda weak (remember this is my person opinion so no one should be getting offended)
The MAIN difference on most S chassis cars when referring to JDM and USDM is the Engine (and all things associated) and the Side the steering wheel is on. Of course VARIOUS cosmetic differences but that being only stated to prevent "that one guy" from throwing out "that one card".
I think something a large number of people forget is that MOST of the S-chassis plants were in Japan (unless the 11th Digit in your VIN is a "C" or "L" your car WAS made in japan) so everyone's car can be a little bit "JDM TYTE" weather it be made for USDM or JDM if that is the type of thing that matters to you.
I could call my car a colossal hunk of blithe and who is going to tell me otherwise? I could say it is a Dinosaur and anyone who tells me different is wrong! I call my daily driver lots of things and NO ONE AND NOTHING WILL EVER TELL ME DIFFERENT.
So why in the heck should it matter when someone wants to call that of an s-chassis something else. None of these conversions were ever OFFICIAL and if they were it sure as hell was not permanent ( speaking only of the Nissan Sil-eighty). Everything else was appellations. PRETTY MUCH NICKNAMES someone randomly spit out and it stuck to be used by everyone who CHOOSE to do so. Choose meaning everyone had a choice, that choice being something made by ONE individual that can not be changed or altered by anyone else unless convinced or manipulated to do so.
Also stated very well, above by white comet it is much more convenient to say "ONEVIA" as apposed to saying "s13 coupe with flip up headlights".

My apologies to anyone this may have offended.
BTW that yellow car a few posts up is VERY sweet and super low. I would lick it, haha
