John Deere Hy-Gard low viscosity. I don't know of anyone that's used it in a Q, but it seems to be pretty well interchangeable with Dexron III and IV. It's synthetic tractor hydraulic fluid and people who've been burning up transmissions behind high hp engines are switching to it because it helps the clutches/band grab better and it takes a LOT of heat to cook it.

I honestly don't remember, I think it's the D4, but it might just be the regular ATF. We make loads of Redline racing suits and the sales rep from here that got it for me had someone from Redline on the line and said it was for 98 Q45 and he sent me a case.

I had a transmission "expert" (he knows more than me) say that he does not recommend putting synth ATF in a transmission that was not built using the correct clutch materials to use synth ATF.

Thoughts?

I dunno exactly what the expert was meaning with that, but on the Ford forums they say to not use Dexron/Mercon with transmissions like the C6 which originally used Type F fluid. However, if the trans has been rebuilt in the last 15 years, the clutches should have been changed and most if not all the rebuild clutches/bands are compatible with Dexron so it's fine to use that fluid in that case.

I have been using Redline D4 atf for years, changed every 25k with wonderful results-transmission shifts like new at 187,719 miles on my 96q-previously used M1,also a very good atf, however redline seems slightly better in cold weather
