well id say its about time to share the project a few friends and i have been working on for the past few weeks between classes and work and such. My roommate had a coupe that he was planning on making into a drift car in high school, he started collecting parts, then lost interest. The car sat for 2 years, over time that once clean coupe got cannibalized. A friend shot a rod through the block of the his ka-t so the motor got pulled from the coupe, the coupe got gutted, poopy brown interior got left out in the desert sun for 2 years and got ruined... the whole 9.so fast forward till a few weeks ago, we were bored, and wanted to build a track car. i called up my roommate. he said we could have his car for $200 if we took all of the stuff. here is what we got. with the sound deadening already removed and all of this so, as you can see we didn't have a motor, and we kind of wanted to make a monster on a budget because we are all broke college students, we tossed many ideas around, buying a blown sr, ka-t sohc ka-t, 350 chevy, maxima motor. anyway we were stumped, so we decided to just work on the chassis, we prepped the engine bay seams, removed all of the brackets, battery tray etc, there was rust under the battery tray so i made a patch panel, dawson tig welded about half of the seams that night, and then miged the rest the next daythe radiator support was wrecked do to a past accident, so we took that off, and we also got our hands on a motor, a 350 out of a chevelle for 100 bucks running, we took some measurements and decided that in order to get it to fit in the bay and for the weight distribution to be anywhere close to okay for a track car we would need to cut out the firewall and mount the motor about 6 inches back into the drivers compartment.we decided to do some weight reduction on this monster so someone cut out the inside of the door and removed a ton of weight.about halfway through that particular day i was driving my hatch home and the damn thing lost power and started running like a**, i drove it home and found this, along with 0 compression in that cylinderso i found an add on a local forum saying free to a good home, so i picked this pantie dropper up as a daily4 inch lift on a subaru brat that runs worse than my blown up hatch. but it was 100% free and the b****es love it. and by love i mean hate, god i get dirty looks in that thing.

thats about where we stand as of now. the motor got tore down and its getting bored 30 thousandths over as we speak, things that are next include, making mounts, positioning the motor, finding a transmission, driveshaft, fabbing a cage, and finalizing a diff, we are leaning towards a j30 vlsd atm but that isn't set in stone either. we plan on running q brakes up front, and altima rotors with z31 calipers out back, we will discover clearance issues with the motor as we dig into the positioning process i am sure, and those will be adressed as we go (motor barely fits in the bay)... more to come. we are aiming for a legitimate car on a tight budget so we are hoping for the best

I like the fab work. I like the budget. Im not a huge fan of the engine. Not cause its not nissan, just cause its F*CKING heavy. But, I guess with mouting it back 6" will help, but still..... All and all i still like it and hope to see updates.

yeah, i hope the 240 doesnt handle like doo doo but im sure it will. lol. it will definitely be a bear to drive around a track. We plan on doing a manual rack similar to flatblackian. the whole car is going to be seam welded and caged so it should be pretty stiff though. and hopefully not rip itself apart.

anyone have any thoughts as far as brakes? would the q brakes up front with altima rotors-z31 calipers out back, with a z32 bmc be enough?

as far as a brat build a 2.2 out of an impreza or legacy would be nice, i have been told that any subaru motor can bolt into a brat. so that means if i was a baller i could do an ej25

the hubs were converted by first banging out 2 studs, then throwing the toyota rim on, marking the hubs and drilling them to fit the toyota wheels, and putting in new studs. as for the lift... Im afraid to look, ill find out when i actually look under it.

outtowin. i think ill go look at the mckinney mounts and stuff right now. thanks for the info ill meander over to the hybrid section.

got alot done on it today, forgot my camera thoughwe got a transmission from the pick and pull, thought it we a muncie 4 speed, as it turns out it was a 3 speed, also picked up a spare j30 diff and a giant like new radiator from there all 3 for next to nothing. and went to the shop and got a fuel cell of an old rock crawler for free there was 3 of us working, i got most of the sound deadening out, vickers started hacking more metal off of the front to mount the new radiator, dawson did some more seam welding in the engine bay. we also made the discovery that we will need to make a new bumper out of fiberglass, or drastically modify the chuki to fit, and let the car cool correctly. and i got the wiring harness all sorted out, and made sure it was together so we can sell it. pics tomorrow, im beat and passing out

well 3 of us put in 10 hours each today on this beast. we got the interior stripped and ready to start the cage and paint the inside, (managed to wire wheel my fingernail off) we will probably go gloss white interior with a blue or black cage. We got a diff cleaned, put together and dropped it in. it is a j30 vlsd i had laying around. same stuff you guys have all seen a thousand times so i didnt take BUT 1 picture.

Anyway on to some interesting stuff i made patches to fill in the holes in the firewall that some racing organizations require to be filled. i realized i could do this quickly by laying paper behind the holes, spraying it with spray paint, then transfer that onto the piece of sheet metal, i then plasma'd them out, and welded them in. At about this time i realize i suck at welding. and i also had to remake the battery tray i made earlier because it was shaped wrong.oh yeah. the transmission, sagnaw 3 speedand the free 20 gallon fuel cellnext it came time to remove all the window rubber crap, pretty quick work with a angle grinder mounted wire wheel... when i got to the sunroof i found ths. and was like "wtf?" does this look like the factory roof? or did someone decide they wanted a sunroof? dawson cut all of the supports out of the trunk and hood to save more weight. both are pretty flimsy now, however it did save a ton of weight. and it should look pretty badass with the v8 with high lift cams vibrating them

then came some fun fabbing for all of us, the radiator support was mangled, and after taking some measurements off of my car we found out the whole front end was out of whack, so it was hammer time! we got it close and decided to make a tube support to hold our giant radiator. it actually came out really badass.first we made a quarter inch thick plate and welded it in essentially boxing the frame then made the supportkinda looks like a mustang front to me

finally we tossed in some lights to see how it would look. we think we are going to cut a few inches off the front of the car, and make our own short front bumper out of fiberglass to accomodate the radiator. hopefully it would look similar to the rocket bunny hatch. but if it looks awful and we fail we can always revert to stock because we have extra panels and a hood.also the car got a nickname and a liscence plate plan.nickname...clit tickler plate... clttklr
