Hello all,

The question defined with a little more clarity means:do the valves share some of the same space as the the pistons but at different times so that if you lose the timing belt, can you do damage to the engine by valve and pistons trying to compete for the same space in the combustion chamber?

Thanks in advance,,

Oh, for vanity's sake, and after $1500-worth pf paint supplies, I HAVE to include a photo of the candy burgundy paint job I just did on mine:

PS, don't look too close at that bumper. It'll be fixed.

You mean interference engine.

Valves open further in an interference engine and project further into the combustion chamber than in a 'free-running' engine. This allows outside air at atmospheric pressure flow faster into the combustion chamber through the larger valve opening. The engine can therefore inhale more air, be a little smaller, and still create as much power while reducing its manufactured cost and also guaranteeing future repair business for its dealer. If a rubber timing belt breaks by not being replaced soon enough, some of the valves stuck in their open position will collide with the top of the pistons, thereby breaking or irreversibly damaging one or the other or both. To make matters worse, it is not possible to measure the wear on such a rubber belt so that it could be replaced when there is some indication of imminent failure. Failure in these belts is catastrophic, without warning. This will require a whole new engine be installed. Woe to the owner. Finally, the rubber belt may have to be replaced long before 60,000 miles solely due to its age. This is really playing a bad p0ker hand. Interference engines are like a time bomb waiting to explode unless replacing the timing belt at the recommended interval. Be aware of that guaranteed future expense before buying a new car, or especially a used car, " with such an engine.

Hi GerryO,

Exactly! So are our 3.0s that type of engine?

:-)

Thanks. 14 coats and many mistakes. I am buffing the car out but am slow due to a doggone double hernia operation I had last week.

The caps are going too. By the way, after these shots were taken, I decided to experiment and sand-blasted the wheels. They were very corroded from road salt (up here in Maine), so I had to do something but I am not too thrilled with the results.

I shot clear over the bare aluminum surface and now they look gray (grey?). So, I may try another experiment. I may sand-blast them one more time and lay down a prismatic-type mini flake/pearl paint onto them and THEN "clear" them in. Hopefully, that will eliminate that grey look they now have. I'll shoot a few photos of it and post them here first.

They sure are. We live on the edge and in constant fear of the timing belt breaking or jumping a tooth.

I believe timing belt equipped engines are inherently quieter than timing chain and gear-drive equipped engines, provided all of the idler bearings are in good shape.

The article claims 50% of cars in a 5000 car study were found to have had their odometers turned back. Wonder if that is really true for all used cars? If true one should probably only buy cars from the original owner of a one owner car, on the assumption most private individuals wouldn't know how to turn the odometer back, whereas most used car dealers and auction lots would. BTW, the recommended replacement interval on 1994 and later J30s is every 105,000 miles, not 60,000 miles. However for a car not driven very much one might want to replace it at less mileage due to plain age deterioration.
