My 1996 240sx 5 spd has a 120K on it and it makes that timing chain sound. I've red some posts on nismoclub.com and they are 2 extremes, one that it doesn't do anything else besides annoying the siht out of you, others say that eventually it will f*** up your engine. Can someone give me a definite answer? Thanks a lot

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I know that on the KA24DE (91-98) the timing chain rattle is not a serious thing. It is just the upper two timing chain guides that the chain is rattling on. They are easily removed by removing the valve cover and front timing cover on the engine. I did this to my KA and it fixed it.

On the other hand, on the KA24E (89-90), I've read about cases where the chain wears through some coolant channel and screws stuff up. I don't remember any other details because I never had the KA24E anyway.

Since you have the DE, you're ok. If the noise bothers you enough, you can do what I said. There's writeups about it on these forums if you search.

I don't think the s14's have the upper timing chain guides.

yes they do.

yoozef = How bad is the timing chain rattle? Is it just a slight ticking or is it a strong rattle? If it's just a slight ticking then most likely it will go away by removing the upper guide, if it's a strong rattle then that means that your timing chain tensioner needs to be replaced. Start by removing the top guide, this is VERY easy it should not take more than 15 minutes, when you do that see if there's any slack in the chain, there should only be a very small amount. If that doesn't fix the problem or there's a lot of slack in the chain, then you need a new tensioner.

Don't forget, there are TWO chain guides on the upper timing chain. The first is on the very top of the chain, the second is on the opposite side of the tensioner (on the right when facing from front of the car).

Removing just the top one did not fix my chain ticking. I had to go back under the valve cover a second time, remove the front timing/cam cover and remove the guide on the right. This eliminated the chain ticking with no detrimental effects.
