Hey everyone, I posted a few days ago about my 91 Q (had a pic of it, is black), and didnt know if my guides have ever been done ( I assumed they have because my Q has 230,000 miles, but don't want to take the risk), So I called the infiniti dealer to get a report of all the work that has been done, and they say it's too old so they have to look in their archives, then a day later they call and say it's not in there because they reuse the numbers? So The only way I could get the report is going to the specific dealer, which I have no idea which one. So if I go to a local shop would they check and see if they have been replaced? if so what do you think it would cost? Or any other suggestions? Thanks guys

I actually called Infiniti corp. and they were nice enough to tell me when and where everything thats been done. This was on a 93 Q.

Try these numbers

800.662.6200

or

800.627.4437

What did they mean by "reuse letters"?

That's exatly what I thought, how can they reuse numbers? They don't reuse the vin, so I don't know. Do you know where I can find the infiniti corp number? Thanks

T3 charges $500 to look [includes a new front main seal and some cleaning inside front cover] or $1,100 to replace guides [all 4 with new tensioners and oil chain/guide] or $1,550 if guides are missing pieces and oil pan has to be dropped to clean it out.

Trained experienced independents should be roughly the same based on a $70/hour labor rate. An expert can do everything but the oil pan in one full day! The problem is you don't know about the pan til you get the front cover off so some tiny lost labor motions vs starting out from the beginning to drop the pan [necessary to support the motor from the top].

Watch out for the guys who just change slackside guides, skip tensioners, and oil chain/guides, offer no cleanup and still charge the same or more.

Okay I just called them and they said The chain or guides have NEVER been replaced (at least at an infiniti dealer) So Now I'm nervous, I guess I gotta take it somewhere to have it done. Maybe it is a new record?

Well if it makes you feel any better, I did my guides myself (on my last Q). I did a good job except for the one bolt I put in too tight and ended up breaking. Lesson learned on that but the car runs like a champ now (but I sold it). If you want to tackle it as a DIY the only thing you need to worry about is 1. Getting parts and 2. Getting the crank pulley off. If you want to do this, hit me up. You provide the space for it and I'd bet it can be done in 8 hours tops. It's not hard...really.

BTW, you probably called Niello Infiniti - the dealer I'll be working for next month. They actually told me it's illegal for them to give away service info on a car without the last registered owner (to their knowledge) approving it. They will tell you that it's not in their database because work was done at another dealer but they can do something called a dealer link and get the info (I didn't tell you that though).

230K is a lot of miles for any car. Now I see you investigating, and possibly investing another $1500 into this car. Have you considered buying a replacement engine, one with fewer miles and with the metal guides already? Just another option..

Just to let you know, my guide job cost me a total of $450 (all parts) and 10 hours of my time - which was spread over a week because at the time I could only work on it after work. Trust me, I could do the job with my eyes closed now. The hardest part is getting the crank pulley off.

btw I actually live in Pittsburg and used to be known as gniknave (I believe you emailed me a while ago).

I have thought about that, I was thinking the 94-96 with the guides not being a problem, but My current engine is very strong ( could have been rebuilt?). And I am REALLY not mechanically inclined, so I would have to use somebody.

The plastic is the backing, and thus the pieces of plastic and the guide (metal) fall into the pan. Then when under heavy load the chain can jump a tooth. That's if you're lucky, cause then stay out of the upper RPMs and you're safe. What's more than likely to happen is a piece of the guide or backing gets into the oil pump or oil pump chain drive assembly. When that happens think OIL STARVATION .

In the picure below you'll see the oil pump chain. Circled in red is a broken piece of the fatal driver side guide that fell onto the oil pump chain and was probably being held in place by the oil pump chain sprocket. Imagine if I had kept driving like this. I had no warning whatsoever. I just decided one day to do the job and that's what I found.

No it's a "He" because when I got him he was pretty messy and very powerful, so it just seemed to be a guy to me.. I do have "lady" cars though.
