I have recently decided to get a boat and learn how to sail.

After a month of waiting I got the call. The boat was a former rental boat that along with three others was put up in a sealed-bid auction. All were in usable condition but IMO this one was the best. The scuffs in the hull were only superficial.

Image

The trailer is solid with no rust and a great set of wheels and tires. The winch is good and it just needs a kickstand wheel.

Image

I snagged the best parts from the selection available between the four boats. There were little things broken but the hull was solid as a rock and I was not satisfied with the use of plastic here anyway. Look for stainless or foam-wrapped steel tubing to replace these in the future. As you can see, the boat was out in the elements for a while.

Image

The rudder is interesting, it kicks up. The plates are IMO too thin, but I think the rudder had been allowed to loosen up and was never corrected. The play combined with users who likely didn't give a rat's hairy booty about the boat have destroyed it. This was the BEST one. I already have ideas to beef it up, no worries.

Image

The centerboard is the swing up type and has some scrapage on the leading edge. The rudder did too. The mechanism works fine but I intend to rip it all out, clean and lube it and replace the control lines.

Image

I think I managed to score the only cover. It was filthy but still very serviceable. A good scrubbing and an hour out in the hot sun and she's good to go.

Image

The mast and boom are Dwyer and the blocks Harken. The years have not done much to them. They cleaned up with soap and water and a scotchbright pad. The cast aluminum ends had the accursed white rust. I gave them heavier attention. I pulled all the cordage off and tightened up the cleats, some were coming loose.

Image

After a few hours the boat is already looking 100% better. I carefully scrubbed off the hull scuffs and gave it a quick wax.

Image

I'm not feeling the stickers and stuff. I will likely get them off and polish the hull nice. Not sure if I will put a different graphics scheme on it or just leave it white, but this is definitely NOT my style.

Image

I have another tab open as I type this, buying some parts! I need all new cordage, scupper plugs, and a few lil bits. I was worried I would need new sails, but not only did I get a serviceable set, but a full extra set new in the bag!
The boat isn't the only project. My intended tow vehicle needs a hitch fabricated. I had to call in a favor and borrow a buddy's truck to bring it home.

NICO PARTY BOAT!

But seriously, you cleaned that thing up nicely. Looks damn good. How much did you get it for? If you don't mind me asking of coarse...

I fully expect a Captain Morgan-esque snapshot when you sail the high seas.

$900. I figure about $200 to refit it and get her ready to sail. More to get me ready to sail. I'm signed up for a sailing course in August and I need to buy some vests and clothes to protect me from the elements. My goal is a big boat in a few years, but this one is a perfect starter boat to learn on. :dblthumb:

Have you thought about a name for your vessel?

The name Roxanne comes to mind. It was a former rental boat so the Police song seems appropriate.
I think I will sail her for a while and let the boat's character tell me its name.

Roxanne is cool. You could even install a red light on her too.

Another good name is "wind breaker" , that could be appropriate in a couple ways....

This boat would appear to be boringly stable. The cats are speedy and challenging I would think. This one looks pretty vanilla. That's ok. Mad don't swim and would prefer to learn at a leisurely pace.
I stepped the mast yesterday and checked for missing parts. I think I will upgrade the traveller to a wire vice a weaker rope. The jib halyard block on the mast is chewed up and it would doe the same to my new halyard so that need to be replaced.

Today was boat day! What is boat day you may ask? Maybe you didn't ask that, but guess what, I'm telling you anyway! :slap:

Two years. I've had this thing two years. How many times have I gone out? It's a number equivalent to the number of sexual experiences Nala has had that involved another person and did not include some sort of sedative.

Boat day is me saying "I'm not picking up the phone, I'm not doing schoolwork, f*** all of you I'm going to clean my boat and see if I still need parts for it. Did I forget to say f*** everyone and everything, don't f*** bother me? Yeah. I'm tired of having all this cool stuff I never play with. The bike, the cars, this boat etc. It's my life and I've been living it for others who don't care about me. See above. :bigfu:

The boat is for sale because I need money for the bike and I can rent a boat if I want, but so far nothing, but window shoppers. I have it. I'm going to use it. It's doing me no good sitting in the driveway rotting with the the two cars that are also sitting and rotting. :frown:

I pulled the mildewed cover and scrubbed it and cleaned the hull. I need some proper boat care products. I waxed it with car wax last time. :gapteeth: I got everything up and tensioned and set up the boomkicker. I still need a few lines for the out and downhauls and have nothing to secure the tack of the jib. I kind of need that. The traveler didn't seem to set up right last time, but I now realize it's because I set the boom way too low. The rudder still needs a rebuild, but I have been looking for a reason to do some more woodworking. :bigthumb:

I need to see how much it will be to store it down the road at the marina so I can easily run down and dump it in the water on a nice day.

I was out in the sun a long time. I think I will wake up very burned tomorrow. You know what, if I do, I'm f*** calling in sick! I have 1200 hours of sick leave on the books, why? Cuz I'm friggin stupid, that why. I'm quite done with that. :squint:

This last post made me realize that this thread is 2 years old. Sorry to hear your project never even saw water. You had better ride the wheels off that dam bike in memory of Roxanne.

btw I totally got the mental image of Inital D with the eight-six in front of the tofu shop in the 2nd to last pic in the OP (without the boat of vourse)

I really think there is nobody who can buy it, or, given the means would step up and give me the money I want. I'm just going to move forward as if that is the case and try to get out there. Got to get some flares and a radio in case it sinks. I was never a good swimmer and I have only gotten more out of shape. I got a kickass life vest, though.

You don't want my MadFu, it's curdy and bitter.

After I snapped the pics I was standing next to the boat writing down the parts I need and a gust swept in and the trailer started moving down the street! :ohno: If the mast wasn't 20 feet high and sure to hit power lines I might try to rig a steering system to the trailer and go for a spin around the block under sail!

I was after booty even before I became a pirate.

Well, it's only a loss if i sell it for less than it's into me for and if I get the $1500 I listed it for I break even. It's in great shape and if not for me putting BS before fun I would be out on the water right now. Bike is priority right now, then car, but i think I can get the boat ready in stolen moments between working on the other things, maybe hit the water by May.

An opportunity knocked. I tend to answer the door at those times. My ASA cert does not allow me to operate a boat in Japan. They do the boat license tests twice a year and English tests are few and far-between. Some other guy put an ad on the local classified looking for Americans to get together to make a test go. I jumped on it.

I am now the proud owner of a Japanese level II operator's permit! I can now command a vessel up to 20 tons up to five NM out. Shiver me timbers!

They have restrictions on how far you can go out? 5 NM doesn't sound like a lot, but then again I have no real reference other than that's two miles past the horizon as you look out to sea from a beach... :gotme

Just sail the damn thing. Very few sailboats are perfect out on the water. If you sink the thing, just take a deep breath of air and hold it in. You'll be buoyant :)

Just don't get caught up in the sail. If she starts to dip her side rails, let the main out.

You should rename the vessel the Love Boat. As captain, you can also perform marriages up to 5NM out. :naughty:

I like how it says "American 14-6" along a stripe of German flag colors. On a boat in Japan. That's one confused boat.

The German flag doesn't have blue...
