I just wanted to say thanks for all the invaluable info I've found here... I had been debating on buying a '94 Q45 that was for sale locally, and after reading a TON of stuff here over the past week, pulled the trigger today.

She only has 99,000 miles, is in incredibly good shape, and even pulled a "disabled parking" placard out of the glove box. She has a rough idle, but thanks to the info I found here, I'm pretty sure I can nail that down with some fuel additive and a new fuel filter.

Anyway, I just wanted to say "hi!" I've never owned an Infiniti before, but dang... what a sweet car! And for $2,800? You gotta be kidding me!

Well, I replaced the fuel filter first thing, and topped off the tank with 91 octane, and it sounds better, but I still have that rough idle. Spark plugs are the next thing to get replaced, and I have seen a lot of different opinions here, but which plugs should I be putting in?

I have a gut feeling that the previous owner used 85 octane... just a hunch. Is that something that is pretty common when you come into a used Q45?

welcome to NICO... more than likely youre going to be looking at injector issues... My first course of action would be to take it out and run it real hard...

Let me be the 2nd person to welcome you to NICO. We kept you waiting a while for a response since our long-time self-appoined greeter is on Exile Island for a few days.

Like Wes said you're probably looking at injector issues and now that you've got the additive in use it up quickly and run her hard. A popular fuel additive is 2 bottles of Redline S-1 Fuel System Cleaner in a full tank (or 1 bottle in half a tank). Try it with your next fill up.

It's real easy to ohm test the injectors (and KS while you're there). Start a log and test them every few months keeping an eye out for any injectors that climb above the 10-14 ohms range.

Wes was remiss in not pointing you towards his website Q45.org. It's a great intro into understanding your Q and the tech help section has good articles written by Wes and Jesda as well as many links back to NICO articles and threads.

There's many other things to check but ohm testing injectors and KS will tell you a lot.

Perhaps the only time I've ever laughed out loud on this forum.

As much guff as people give Brian, he is a useful member to this forum. He's helped me with my car via email on several occasions (but perhaps should be a bit more understanding of what these cars are NOW, and what 99% of them WILL be).

Welcome to NICO! You'll get all the help you ever need here...but before you ask a question, be sure to thoroughly research the FSM as most answers are in there. I'm not referring to this post.

This weekend, I have a 600 mile run. I guess I'll know a lot more after that.

Thanks for the welcome, and I am genuinely thankful for the tips. I haven't learned my way around the forum yet, but I DID school a snotty BMW this morning at a stoplight. I guess my problems can't be THAT bad.

PS: always shift to "3" at a stoplight. lol

One last introductory question, if I may? How noisy is "too noisy" for a fuel pump? The sound from the back of my car is very noticeable. Time to get a new one?

Any time other than when the key is in ACC for 5 seconds or in winter till coolant reaches more than 32*F (a few minutes). You should not hear the pump. I doubt you would even hear it when at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) Because of all the noise the engine makes.

So yes you need a new fuel pump and O-ring.

Welcome to NICO.

OK... a new fuel pump. Makes sense...

The last head-scratcher for me is a consistent miss. It seems as if it is only one cylinder. Sparks plug or injector?

Thanks in advance...

Yay! Four days- and 500 miles later- after dumping a crudload of Techron additive into the tank and making sure the fuel was 91 octane, tonight, the miss just disappeared, and my Check Engine light went off!

Now I only have that whiny fuel pump and an odd sound down by the alternator to worry about. sigh...
